Excellent resource

This is a very densely written work that is very well organized. The book is also nicely referenced, and very up to date. I bought the Kindle version of the book and it is very readable even though it is rather technical. I would prefer that the Kindle version be broken into chapters that you can click to. That would make it easier to access individual chapters easier. Also, even though the different types of protocols for ovarian stimulation are provided, there is little suggests as to how one might tweak these cycles in order to help sub fertile women conceive.

All in all, a very good book for those interested in some of the latest work in human early embryology and in vitro fertilization.

An Important Book on the Thoughts of Gottfried Leibniz

The contribution of Gottfried Leibniz to the development of man is immeasurable. However, knowing his contribution is difficult to assemble because Leibniz published only one book during his life. Yet, he was a prolific writer of papers and letters to many people on many subject. Beside discovering the infinitesimal calculus, which is taught is all high schools today, he was known as a 'walking encyclopedia.'

The material in this book was made by Leibniz in response to England's John Locke's 'Essay Concerning Human Understanding' (1690). The material was prepared by Leibniz to use it in a debate with Locke. Locke proposed physical atoms for the universe. This is consistent with Newton's physical universe. But, Leibniz proposed monads, which are becoming part of modern creation theories. However, Locke died and the debate never occurred. Instead, Leibniz established correspondence in 1715-16 with Samuel Clark, a disciple of Isaac Newton. This correspondence is an excellent summary of Leibniz's thoughts before he died in 1716. It shows the basic differences between Newton and Leibniz in both science and mathematics.

This book should become part of the home library of any intellectual family.

Dr Iain Gardner is Chair and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Studies in Religion, Sydney University. He has published widely in Coptic and Manichaean studies, including the standard The Kephalaia of the Teacher (1995). He is also editor for the newly found Manichaean texts from the Dakhleh Oasis.

Samuel Nan-Chiang Lieu is Professor of Ancient History and Co-Director of the Ancient History Documentary Research Centre, Macquarie University. He is the author of many books including The Roman Eastern Frontier and the Persian Wars II AD 363-630 (with G. Greatrex, 2002), From Constantine to Julian: Pagan and Byzantine Views (with D. A. S. Montserrat, 1996), The Roman Eastern Frontier and the Persian Wars AD 226-363 (with M. Dodgeon, 1991, revised 1994, 1996).

Perfect!

There are 5 things in particular that I admire about this work:

(1) It has a superb introduction, which details historical, mythological, and various contextual aspects of Mani and his followers (it is nearly 50 pages).

(2) It is splendidly organized. Just check out the table of contents yourself.

(3) This book has a nice format. While the second point pertains to topical organization, this regards the aesthetic aspects of the work. In other words, it's a joy to read because...well, it's easy on the eyes.

(4) It's comprehensive. Not necessarily in length, although that is true, too. What I mean here is that it covers a lot without getting into pedantic concerns.

(5) There is a very helpful dictionary of mythico-theological terms near the bibliography, which I referred to repeatedly in my reading (and still do). If you keep getting confused over who the Maiden of Light is, the Five Sons of the Living Spirit, or the Third Ambassador, don't fret.

In conclusion, two renowned Manichaean scholars in the world today have provided an invaluable compass to steer one's way through the maze of Manichaean literature and scholarship. Recommended to be read with Lieu's 'Manichaeism in the Later Roman Empire and Medieval China' (another invaluable work).

Drawing on the work of Wittgenstein, the author develops an account of social existence that argues that social practices are the fundamental phenomenon in social life. This approach, while respecting the multiplicity and heterogeneity emphasized in recent social thought, offers new insight into the social constitution of individuals, surpassing and critiquing the existing practice theories of Bourdieu, Giddens, and Lyotard. The author thereby shows the relevance of Wittgenstein's work to a range of social theoretic issues to which it hitherto has not been applied. The book will be of particular interest to social and continental philosophers, philosophers of the social sciences, a wide range of social theorists in sociology and political science, as well as some literary theorists.

Superb exploration of history of interpretation.

The history of a text's interpretation (or its reception) is at long last being taken seriously as a vital aspect of interpreting it. Sawyer here delivers on his long-awaited promise to pursue such a line of enquiry with respect to the book of Isaiah. As he says, much that is of great interest to readers of Isaiah lies not in reconstructed philology or historical setting, but in its appropriation in music, art, and the general mythology of Christianity (e.g. the ox and the ass of the nativity scene; the suffering servant in the passion...). We can only hope that this might signal the beginning of the end of dry-as-dust and theologically thin commentaries on biblical books, and the beginning of a whole new approach to dialoging with ancient texts. Groundbreaking.

Boring. and I'm an academic! Does anyone need to read this stuff? Too many long quotes, esp. since the book is short. This is typing, not writing. I'm sure the research is adequate, but ultimately, who cares about any of this? The writer demonstrates that black minstrel shows were popular and that they made blacks look bad. Duh. It's really no more complex than that; the writer merely tries to make you think it is, with 'profound' and 'important' dates and charts and....
