Not Chisholm's best work

This is the last book the excellent 20th century philosopher Roderick Chisholm wrote. It contains many of the final thoughts he had on metaphysical matters and for that reason is interesting. However, Chisholm was losing his sight by the time this book came about, and he wasn't able to edit it very well. Apparently he was a very visual writer and needed to see his thoughts written out to evaluate them and put them together coherently. This book jumps around a lot, even within chapters. Pieces of it are good on their own, but it doesn't fit together well, and substantive subject changes are frequent without any completion to the previous line of thought. It's probably worth reading for anyone who enjoys Chisholm's work. There's probably much benefit from such a pursuit. However, be aware of the deficiences of this book.

One of the best academic books I have read in 20 years

During my many years as an undergraduate in the humanities, graduate student in the humanities & social sciences, and as a professor in the social sciences, I have obsessively read academic books on multitudes of topics. I am interested in nearly everything, it seems, and actually spent my last sabbatical doing research in information architecture. Not only is Intentions in the Experience of Meaning one of the most interesting books I have ever read but it is also an example of academic writing at its best. Gibbs describes the many ways that the human search for intentions in the communication of others [as well as the human desire to hide one's own intentions when communicating to others] plays out in such diverse areas as law, art & literature. He uses excellent examples, approaches the topic from many directions, makes no judgements but leaves the reader with many very compelling questions. One interesting example is the conflict between the public's perception of the artist's intent and the meaning of the extremely controversial art work, "Piss Christ" and the artist's defensive statements that that the meaning he intended to communicate through the work was significantly different than the public's perception. Personally, I think he knew exactly what kind of response his work would elicit but it is a fascinating topic of discussion.
This book is extremely well-written & organized. The chapter summaries are excellent and it is quite thought-provoking. I have sent copies to friends in many walks of life and all agreed that is is a fascinating read.I would recommend this book for all readers who are open to exploring the many facets of human communication, controversial issues and the complex nature of meaning.
I am on "minus time" and wrote this very quickly so I hope that I did not misrepresent any aspect of the book.

Interesting insights

The book sets a good basis for comparative sociology of power and legitimacy. It observes two dictators who at least these days seem to be the most despised leaders of the 20th century. Lewin and Kershaw have brought together a handful of WW II top scholars, whose articles jointly create a sturdy basis for understanding differences and similarities between the rules of Stalin and Hitler.

This brings me to an important point worked on in the introduction: Scholars of history need not keep their hands off comparisons. Actually, no historian can completely avoid comparing phenomena, so it is better to be explicit about the whole thing than hide it behind the illusionary curtain of pure historical description. Stalin and Hitler are often compared in literature, but almost never does this comparison rest on a strong theoretical foundation. It is just so easy to bunch up two non-western autocrats and say that they are similar, because they caused millions of deaths, or because they had many fanatic followers, and leave it there.

For me, the most interesting parts of the book were the chapters about leadership cults of Stalin and Hitler. For example Lewin, Mommsen and Kershaw show us how the leaders built their structures of authority. Hitler's system of power was doomed to fail. It was self-destructive. Stalin, on the other hand, was able and willing to channel part of his divine glamour for the benefit of state bureaucracy. However conflicting wishes of the bureaucrats and the paranoid will of Stalin may have often been, Stalin's death did not leave the whole Soviet system hanging in the void.

France's Answer to Henry VIII, and More!

This is a scholarly life of Francois I, a king about whom Americans know little or nothing, but one that was instrumental in introducing the idea of the grandeur of the French monarchy. Francois lived life to the fullest: he invaded Italy multiple times (was even captured and held for ransom once), married twice, had mistresses everywhere, built palaces and castles all over France -- including Fontainebleau and many of the most famous chateaux of the Loire.
Therefore, it is a little unfortunate that his biographer had so little of that life rub off on him. This is Knecht's second stab at Francois's life, so one would think he could step back a little and marvel at what this truly remarkable man accomplished in his lifetime. After all, he brought Leonardo Da Vinci up to live with him at Amboise and allowed one of the books of Rabelais' PANTAGRUEL to be dedicated to him. Yet Rabelais and Da Vinci are brought into the book only in passing.
Both Henry VIII and the Emperor Charles V were somewhat cowed by this monarch, whose left hand held a sword and right hand, an olive branch.
This is probably a silly thing to mention, but I feel I would recognize Francois if he were alive today. Most illustrations of Medieval or Renaissance princes are more or less interchangeable: Charles the Bold, Richard III, Philip II of Spain. The portraits of Francois make him look like a real person, as if he actually had some control about how he was depicted. A little of his personality comes through in this book, such as in his dealings with artist Benvenuto Cellini -- but what a personality!
Knecht may not be a great biographer like Duff Cooper (Talleyrand) or Richard Holmes (Coleridge), but he did succeed in bringing something of the essence of this great king across.

It was easy to read - maybe too easy. I was expecting a more detailed and better organised book. I read history out of curiosity, but my curiosity about the origins of the two World Wars remains unsatisified.

A good introduction to a vast subject.

This is a very short book on such a huge theme...
The book presents the reasons for both wars as an strategic decision by the rulers of Germany. It makes a very good case, of the connection between the reasons for both wars.
Due to its size it is not very detailed, but still is very interesting. The author has included excerpts of historical documents that are related to the reasoning developed in the book.
It is a good book to start understanding why these two wars happened.

This book discusses the varying views of the origins of World War I and World War II. I emphasize the word "origins." This book does not give an analysis of the Wars. I borrowed it from the library to find out the reasons World War I started. I was quited satisfied with this book.

Groundbreaking Study

This is the only in-depth scholarly work extant on the mass of unfinished books Hemingway left behind in 1961. Besides that, it is fluidly written, thoroughly documented, thoughtfully analyzed, and excellent in all respects.

It matters not whether or not the thesis -- that the posthumous works constitute a loose unified work -- holds up. To state it and explore it, as the author does, is to cast a lot of light on the very complex issue of Hemingway's last works and their difficult manuscripts. No one had even gone as far as to lay the groundwork for such a question before Burwell. Indeed it was doubtless necessary to proceed on some sort of hypothesis to go through these widely divergent manuscripts chronologically, as the author does, and to then present a coherent text of her own regarding her studies.

The author also has a great openness and sympathy for Hemingway and his tortured, insistent aestheticism. It shines through the entire work and raises it to a very rare level in modern literary criticism.

What happenend to Hemingway after the war?

Burwell's study on Hemingway's life and work after the Second World War tries to answer this question. Burwell makes connections between various unfinished and posthumously published Hemingway works, his life, and his artistic goals following the war. Often, these contacts are a bit strained or overextended. But beside this, the book is an interesting look at Hemingway's post-war ventures.

He started with a massive Ur-text, at over 1,400 manuscript pages, and from this work, the novels that would become Islands in the Stream, The Garden of Eden, True at First Light, The Old Man and the Sea, and by proxy, A Moveable Feast, would emerge. Hemingway had set a grand aesthetic plan in place for himself after the war: it was nothing less than his total refashioning of himself as an artist. Gone was the laconic understatement; in its place, was more of a post-modern slant. Hemingway after the war had a deep concern with gender roles, the nature of creativity, and the connection between writing, the world, and memory. His physical and mental decline prevented him from fully realizing this vision. Burwell's book catalogs all of this and cautions us not to see Hemingway's post-war productions as so much posthumously published schlock. She uses manuscript copies, letters, and interviews in the study to provide a full picture of Hemingway's process.

This book was published in 1996. Some of what she describes has changed. The Africa book has been published as True at First Light, and later in a more expanded version as Under Kilimanjaro. Burwell writes about Mary Hemingway's edits to A Moveable Feast. Since then, a new edition has come out with changes made by Sean Hemingway, trying to "correct" Mary Hemingway's tinkering with the manuscript and reflect more of what Hemingway wanted from this work.
