Since the late 1970s, the gap between the rich and poor in Britain has widened considerably. It is now recognised that the growth of inequality in the United Kingdom has been faster than that of any comparable industrial country. This is obviously an important issue, and one which after a long period of neglect is attracting increasing attention. Economists and others concerned with social problems linked with rising inequality are making efforts to understand the factors which have contributed to the current situation. Based on the results of the first major research programme in this area since the Royal Commission of the 1970s, this book examines income and wealth distribution in the United Kingdom over the last two decades. The country's leading specialists in the area tackle the problem from a wide variety of perspectives. Contributions include: the analysis of income distribution; the effects of greater female participation in the labour force; social security reform; and geographical variation at the national and local scale. Understanding the complexity of these, and other, factors is crucial to designing policies which can begin to cope with income inequalities.

A good treatment of emotion and in particular shame and a helpful way to deal with the emotional life of individuals that doesn't rely on psychoanalytic theory. He treats six sociologists: Simmel, Cooley, Elias, Lynd, Goffman, Sennett. His discussion of Norbert Elias is especially worthwhile.

In this important book, Scheff offers an innovative approach to understanding human behavior which relate the smallest part to the broadest wholes of social structure. He sees the details and connection of everyday life usually found only in the finest novels. Scheff combine the insights of the humanities and social sciences to capture the same evocative details of sight, sound and context, to understand "human reality".

Barth Speaks to the Postmodern Age .

This volume is a treasure trove of expositions of one of, if not, THE GREATEST THEOLOGIANS OF THE LAST COUPLE OF CENTURIES! they are all so good I hesitate to isolate one; however the entry on Barth and Postmodernism is my first choice. I think that Barth is perhaps THE theologian for the so-called Postmodern Age.

A Good Reference Source on Barth

Any book that attempts to summarize the thought of Barth in 300 pages is faced with an impossible task. Barth's thought was so exhaustive and trickled down into so many areas of theology and life that no summary can do complete justice to Barth. Nevertheless, this book puts forth a good effort toward that end.

Webster has assembled many of the heavy hitters in Barth scholarship to tackle various key areas of Barth's thought. Trevor Hart provides a good chapter on Barth's view of revelation. Nigel Biggar's contribution on ethics is also good.

The brewing scholarly battle between Graham Ward and Bruce McCormack concerning possible similarities between Barth and Derrida regarding language is not hinted at in the book. The reader only gets Ward's side of it, in which he argues that Barth's contention that human language is inherently incapable of describing the "wholly other" God finds a home in the later thought of Derrida. McCormack is on record saying that any similarities between Barth and Derrida are superficial, and in my view, McCormack is closer to the truth on this. However, this book does not present McCormack's position, and thus may very well give the reader the impression that Ward's position is the accepted position on this question within Barth scholarship. It is not.

In addition, one would have hoped for a more in-depth treatment regarding Barth's relationship to Kantian philosophy. Given Barth's crucial importance chronologically in coming onto the theological scene in Europe at a time when the Kantian-influenced theologies of Schleiermacher and Ritschl reigned supreme, an understanding of Barth's intense reaction against both strains strikes me as critical in putting Barth into context and assessing him within this context. While Kant is mentioned more than once in this book, it is only in skeletal form, and this is a weakness. Putting Barth into the proper historical context is absolutely essential in assessing his importance, and this book could have been better at doing that.

But overall, the contributions in here are scholarly, well documented, and informative for someone looking to gain a good working knowledge of Barth. Evangelicals need to contend with Barth responsibly, and we have been mostly neglectful in doing this. One way to do this is to read a book like this which attempts to thoughtfully interact with Barth from a mostly non-evangelical perspective. As such, I commend it to discerning evangelicals.

Thought Provoking Book on Barth

Any multi-authored book on one writer/ theologian is bound to have high points and low points. However, this book is a must read. As an introduction to Barth's thought this is not for the beginner. It presupposes a fairly high amount of knowledge regarding Barth to be able to work through it. Having said this -- most of the writers do an outstanding job in interacting with Barth's thought. Webster's introduction is nicely done. Heron's conclusion and interaction with Barth's legacy is also beautiful. And then, its worth having the book just for Bruce McCormack's, George Hunsinger's, and Trevor Hart's articles on Barth. If you want to begin to understand Barth, this is a book that you must read eventually.

Nietzsche has been proclaimed the seminal figure of modern philosophy as well as one of the most creative and critically influential geniuses in the history of secular thought.

Bernard Williams is Deutsch Professor of Philosophy, University of California, Berkeley, and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. His many publications include Problems of the Self (Cambridge University Press, 1973), Moral Luck (Cambridge University Press, 1981), Ethics and the Limits of Philosophy (Harvard University Press, 1986), Shame and Necessity (University of California Press, 1993), and Making Sense of Humanity (Cambridge University Press, 1995).

Richard Schacht is Professor of Philosophy and Jubilee Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Emeritus) at the University of Illinois. His books include Nietzsche (1983); Making Sense of Nietzsche (1995); Hegel and After (1975); Alienation (1970); The Future of Alienation (1994); and Finding an Ending: Reflections on Wagner's Ring (2004, with Philip Kitcher). He is editor of Nietzsche: Selections (1993); Nietzsche, Genealogy, Morality (1994); and Nietzsche's Postmoralism (2001).

Desmond Clarke is Professor of Philosophy at University College Cork. He received a DLitt from the National University of Ireland, was Jean Monnet Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence, and has been elected to the Royal Irish Academy. He is the author of a number of books on Descartes and the seventeenth century, most recently Descartes' Theory of Mind (2005).

Karl Ameriks is McMahon Hank Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. A recipient of fellowships from the Humboldt Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the Earheart Foundation, he is the author of several books, including Kant's Theory of Mind and Kant and the Fate of Autonomy, and editor of The Cambridge Companion to German Idealism. He is also co-editor of the series Cambridge Texts in the History of Philosophy.

Nietzsche at his Aphoristic Best

If you like aphorisms and philosophy, this book will become one of your bibles. If nothing else, it's just plain fun to read for his incredible wit. Of course you have to put his ideas in the context of the period in which he wrote and understand that he has his own odd prejudices, but the brilliance of his understanding of the human condition really shines through. The biggest mistake any reader could make is to think Nietzsche was an anti-semite---far from it. He was anti-neanderthal. In this book especially the reader sees his low tolerance for received wisdom. This book is nothing less than part of the origin of Western psychology as practiced today. It also represents the demolition of science and philosophy polluted by the received Western theological framework. Some of the best parts are when he skewers religion. You have to love his style even if you do not agree with his pessimistic disgust for piety. This is the kind of philosophy book you need not fret over, unless you harbor wishful thinking about a supremely benevolent deity. Instead of making an elaborate argument about the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin, as preceeding systematic philosophers did literally and figuratively, Nietzsche bends the pin and throws it in the trash. I wish I had read this before his Genealogy of Morals, as knowing his thoughts here would have made that book far more interetsing and understandable. I highly recommend philosophy students first approaching Nietzsche pick up Human, All Too Human to start their study. And if you are religious and want to bolster your faith, well, you should stay far away from this book.

In response to some of the prattlings below-only those who do not know the first thing about Nietzsche think that he was at all anti-Semitic. He wrote clearly, very clearly, against that and against nationalism. In one of his books he stated that Germany should not admit any more Jews inside of her borders. Why? Because he felt that the German people lacked an identity, and knew that Jewish people had a very strong identity. He did not think that Germany, weak and unrealized as it was, could stand an influx of a people that he repeatedly characterized as remarkable.

I am somewhat obsessed with Nietzsche, and this book started it all. Do not dive into his later, more well known masterpieces (Beyond Good and Evil, the Genealogy of Morals, The Gay Science) without acquainting yourself with this book. It is an introduction to his style, and there is no better example of his mastery of psychological observations. In this book he comments on all elements of social reality ("no one thinks to thank the clever man for restraining his wit when in the company of those who cannot practice wit" for example), going into love, friendship, the tenor of social gatherings, absolutely everything that is psychologically investigatable. He brings this method to his later books, in which he tackles larger issues, like the history of religion, philosophy, morality, and other things. But it all starts here-his later critiques of Christianity and everything else are far more understandable after a thorough acquaintance with his psychological method, first and best presented here. If you are at all sensitive and introspective, this book will move you to tears more than a few times.

Excellent Source for Christians

Northcott takes seriously the allegation that Christianity is to blame for the current environmental crisis. He examines numerous criticisms of Christian doctrine that attempt to show the incompatibility of Christian piety and environmental concern. For example, it has been argued that spirit/matter dualism in Christian thought denigrates material existence to the detriment of all life that lacks a 'soul'. Some critics advocate a complete abandonment of traditional monotheism in order to motivate the religious to save the planet. Ecofeminists especially think that spirit/matter dualism leads to environmental degradation, an inevitable consequence of patriarchy itself which is rooted in dualism. Northcott searches the scriptures and Christian tradition to show that this is a misunderstanding of Christian theology and he also deals with texts in the bible that suggest human domination of all life. After finding considerable scriptural support for the value of non-human creation before God, Northcott thinks the answer is in the 'cosmic covenant' and he articulates a theology of interelatedness that avoids the pitfalls of radical Greek dualism on the one hand and the extreme monism of ecofeminism and the Gaia hypothesis on the other. Most importantly for Christians, Northcott's explanation of the covenant takes seriously the ontological distance between God and creation while affirming the relationality between them. Non-human creation has value before God and humans have responsibilities to creation. Northcott considers many secular environmental ethical theories and finds major shortcoming in them all. For Northcott, it is the secularization of society that bears the brunt of the blame for the environmental crisis. At the end, Northcott considers what an ecologically and socially just society might be like. Some may find his views radical but they deserve thoughtful consideration.

Great, advanced intro to dynamical systems

This is really one of the very best books on dynamical systems available today. Nearly every topic in modern dynamical systems is treated in detail. The authors have provided many important comments and historical notes on the material presented in the main text. The writing is clear and the many topics discussed are given appropriate motivation and background.

There are only two potential drawbacks. First, the prerequisites for this book are quite high. The reader should be familiar with real and functional analysis, differential geometry, topology, and measure theory, for starters. Fortunately a well-organized appendix collects the key results of each of the branches of math for the reader's reference. Second, many dynamical systems of interest to applied mathematicians, scientists, and engineers arise from differential equations. This book does not discuss in much detail the connection between ODEs and continuous dynamical systems. Other books (e.g. Perko) treat this connection more thoroughly.

For completeness, clarity, and rigor, Katok and Hasselblatt is without equal. If you work in dynamical systems, you should definitely have this excellent text on your bookshelf. Highly recommended.

Excellent rigorous introduction to chaotic dynamical system

This remarkable book is by far the best rigorous introduction to many facets of the modern theory of (chaotic) dynamical systems. It introduces and rigorously develops the central concepts and methods in dynamical systems in a hands-on and highly insightful fashion. The authors are world experts in smooth dynamical systems and have played a major role in the development of the modern theory and this shows througout the book.

The book starts with a comprehensive discussion of a series of elementary but fundamental examples. These examples are used to formulate the general program of the study of asymptotic properties as
well as to introduce the principal notions (differentiable and topological equivalence, moduli, asymptotic orbit growth, entropies,
ergodicity, etc.) and, in a simplified way, a number of important methods (fixed point methods, coding, KAM-type Newton method, local normal forms, etc.). This chapter alone is worth the price of the
book.

The main theme of the second part is the interplay between local analysis near individual (e.g., periodic) orbits and the global complexity of the orbit structure. This is achieved by exploring
hyperbolicity, transversality, global topological invariants, and variational methods. The methods include study of stable and unstable manifolds, bifurcations, index and degree, and construction of orbits as minima and minimaxes of action functionals.

In the third and fourth part the general program is carried out for low-dimensional and hyperbolic dynamical systems which are particularly amenable to such analysis. In addition these systems have interesting particular properties. For hyperbolic systems there are structural stability, theory of equilibrium (Gibbs) measures, and asymptotic
distribution of periodic orbits, in low-dimensional dynamical systems classical Poincare-Denjoy theory, and Poincare-Bendixson theories are presented as well as more recent developments, including the theory of twist maps, interval exchange transformations and noninvertible interval maps.

This book should be on the desk (not bookshelf!) of any serious student of dynamical systems or any mathematically sophisticated scientist or engineer interested in using tools and paradigms of dynamical systems to model or study nonlinear systems.

Great book with lots of detail

This book is a comprehensive overview of modern dynamical systems that covers the major areas. The authors begin with an overview of the main areas of dynamics: ergodic theory, where the emphasis is on measure and information theory; topological dynamics, where the phase space is a topological space and the "flows" are continuous transformations on these spaces; differentiable dynamics where the phase space is a smooth manifold and the flows are one-parameter groups of diffeomorphisms; and Hamiltonian dynamics, which is the most physical and generalizes classical mechanics. Noticeably missing in the list of references for individuals contributing to these areas are Churchill, Pecelli, and Rod, who have done interesting work in the area of both topological and Hamiltonian mechanics. No doubt size and time constraints forced the authors to make major omissions in an already sizable book.
Some elementary examples of dynamical systems are given in the first chapter, including definitions of the more important concepts such as topological transitivity and gradient flows. The authors are careful to distinguish between topologically mixing and topological transitivity. This (subtle) difference is sometimes not clear in other books. Symbolic dynamics, so important in the study of dynamical systems, is also treated in detail.
The classification of dynamical systems is begun in Chapter 2, with equivalence under conjugacy and semi-conjugacy defined and characterized. The very important Smale horseshoe map and the construction of Markov partitions are discussed. The authors are careful to distinguish the orbit structure of flows from the case in discrete-time systems.
Chapter 3 moves on to the characterization of the asymptotic behavior of smooth dynamical systems. This is done with a detailed introduction to the zeta-function and topological entropy. In symbolic dynamics, the topological entropy is known to be uncomputable for some dynamical systems (such as cellular automata), but this is not discussed here. The discussion of the algebraic entropy of the fundamental group is particularly illuminating.
Measure and ergodic theory are introduced in the following chapter. Detailed proofs are given of most of the results, and it is good to see that the authors have chosen to include a discussion of Hamiltonian systems, so important to physical applications.
The existence of invariant measures for smooth dynamical systems follows in the next chapter with a good introduction to Lagrangian mechanics.
Part 2 of the book is a rigorous overview of hyperbolicity with a very insightful discussion of stable and unstable manifolds. Homoclinicity and the horseshoe map are also discussed, and even though these constructions are not useful in practical applications, an in-depth understanding of them is important for gaining insight as to the behavior of chaotic dynamical systems. Also, a very good discussion of Morse theory is given in this part in the context of the variational theory of dynamics.
The third part of the book covers the important area of low dimensional dynamics. The authors motivate the subject well, explaining the need for using low dimensional dynamics to gain an intuition in higher dimensions. The examples given are helpful to those who might be interested in the quantization of dynamical systems, as the number-theoretic constructions employed by the author are similar to those used in "quantum chaos" studies. Knot theorists will appreciate the discussion on kneading theory.
The authors return to the subject of hyperbolic dynamical systems in the last part of the book. The discussion is very rigorous and very well-written, especially the sections on shadowing and equilibrium states. The shadowing results have been misused in the literature, with many false statements about their applicability. The shadowing theorem is proved along with the structural stability theorem.
The authors give a supplement to the book on Pesin theory. The details of Pesin theory are usually time-consuming to get through, but the authors do a good job of explaining the main ideas. The multiplicative ergodic theorem is proved, and this is nice since the proof in the literature is difficult.
