Ethics and Extermination: Reflections on Nazi Genocide, by Michael Burleigh

This series of essays by one of today's most original and prolific scholars on German racial policy concern three interrelated aspects of Nazi Germany: relations with "the East," "euthanasia," and extermination. The collection includes important and wholly new contributions to the German-Soviet war and other national tragedies; to the controversial question of whether the Nazi analogy has any relevance to contemporary ethical discussions; and to the contemporary historiography, including works of fiction and literary criticism, of the Holocaust.

Review
"...Burleigh's work stands out for three reasons. First, he never loses sight of the fact that all those involved--perpetrators, victims and those...who ended up being both--were human beings. His use of the evidence that illuminates individual experience is consistently superb and often painfully memorable. Second, he writes without jargon in an unaffected and often arresting style. And third, he does not strike facile moralistic poses. All these qualities are abundantly in evidence in his powerful chapter on the Nazi-Soviet war: a tour de force which evokes the horror of that conflict more vividly than anything I have ever read." Niall Ferguson, The Sunday Telegraph

"...Burleigh's essays are solidly researched and sound in judgment. ...undergraduate and graduate students may find some of the essays helpful." Richard Weikart, German Studies Review

"These essays are distinguished and distinctive contributions...they reveal much about the personal reference points of a leading authority on Nazi Germany, while further consolidating his scholarly achievement." Paul Weindling, Canadian Journal of History

"...it would be a mistake to ignore Ethics and Extermination, a powerful and informative volume... This well-written...volume provides much historical detail, new information, and clarifying theoretical argument regarding the nature and conditions of the Holocaust..." Paul Hollander, Partisan Review

This well-written and sometimes justifiably polemical volume provides much historical detail, new information, and clarifying theoretical argument regarding the nature and conditions of the Holocaust." Partisan Review

FROM THE HANDICAPPED TO THE JEWS
By A Customer
Michael Burleigh, an English historian, is the author of an earlier book on the Nazi "euthanasia" campaign of 1940, when Nazi officials, doctors, nurses, and hospital administrators joined together in the persecution of handicapped Germans. Over 70,000 people were murdered in about one year.
In this book Burleigh reflects on the "mind set" of the Nazi murderers, their attitudes towards their victims, and the ethical assumptions they made. He also comments with intelligence and perception on post-WW II reactions.
This book is insightful and interesting and rewarding for both general and scholarly readers. Burleigh brings wisdom and humanity to this all too dreadful subject.

Review
"At first glance this weighty biography of one of the most demanding Writers in the Western tradition may seem unlikely recommendation for nonspecialists. But the experience of reading it will challenge this judgment, as it will much received wisdom about the German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831)....Mr. Pinkard has written engrossingly if a supreme instance of the life dedicated to thinking. Richard Velkley, Washington Times

[Pinkard] takes Hegel's seemingly disconnected discussions and successfully weaves them together into a coherent argument. The result is a masterfully crafted and highly readable piece of Hegel scholarship." The Philosophical Quarterly

"Terry Pinkard has written an extremely clear and insightful book about Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. In concentrating attention on Hegel's account of the nature of our social existence and the history of our social practices, he has been able to explain a very great deal of the book's structure and development, and he has presented a challenging, contemporary account of Hegel's case for the social character of human rationality. This is as thoughtful and compelling a book on Hegel as one is likely to find in any language, from any period." Robert B. Pippin, University of Chicago

"Future works on Hegel's social thought must henceforth refer to this work." Howard N. Tuttle, Review of Metaphysics

"rescuing shipwrecked reputations is a thankless task...(amongst others) terry Pinkard's Hegel: A Biography (Cambridge) is a galliant rehabilitation of a flawed prophet. Whether we like them or not, we need to know abput them." The Daily Telegraph, Daniel Johnson

From the Back Cover
The Phenomenology of Spirit is both one of Hegel's most widely read books and one of his most obscure. This book is the most detailed commentary on Hegel's work available. It develops an independent philosophical account of the general theory of knowledge, culture and history presented in the Phenomenology. In a clear and straightforward style, Terry Pinkard reconstructs Hegel's theoretical philosophy and shows its connection to ethical and political theory. He sets the work in a historical context and shows the contemporary relevance of Hegel's thought for European and Anglo-American philosophers. The principal audience for the book is teachers and students of philosophy, but the great interest in Hegel's work and the clarity of Pinkard's exposition ensure that historians of ideas, political scientists, and literary theorists will also read it.

About the Author
Terry Pinkard is Professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University. His most recent book is Hegel: A Biography (Cambridge, 2001).

Great first step
By Justin Evans
Perhaps *the* place to start if all you know about Hegel is that he's a metaphysical lunatic who thinks 'The Absolute' develops over time and individuals don't exist. Pinkard effectively destroys this silly reading, and provides an interesting one in its place: that Hegel is basically talking about the accounts we give of things and ourselves, and showing how they change over time. This leaves out a great deal though, reducing Hegel to a bit too much of a pragmatist. Pippin's work (e.g., 'Hegel's Idealism') is a good corrective, since it involves much more the transcendental question of how we come to know objects, or what an object is for us.

The best thing about this book, though, is that it makes the Phenomenology - one of the least coherent books of all time - coherent. Pinkard treats the opening chapters as they obviously ought to be treated, an investigation into the minimal conditions for an account of how things are (to put it in unhelpfully abstract terms). He argues that these minimal conditions include consciousness, and that the second section of the PhS is an investigation into the minimal conditions for an account of consciousness - which turns out to include self-consciousness, so that the next section is an investigation into *its* minimal conditions. The last, historical portion of the PhS is an account of how we came to this point. That all this makes sense is remarkable; not sure if it's right though. I suspect it just is incoherent.

One thing to note: I've read the PhS, and re-read most of it many times. It's not clear to me if this is helpful as an introduction to the reading of the PhS, but I'm certain it would be helpful to read alongside Hegel's work. And the introduction is excellent if you're looking for a short intro.

understanding Hegel
By Kurt Mueller-vollmer
This is an important book that helps the contemporary reader gain access to and understand Hegel's masterwork, the "Phenomenology of Spirit". It stands next to and supplements well the French philosopher Jean Hyppolite's (Foucault's teacher) classic book "Genesis and Structure of Hegel's Phenomenolog of Spirit".

Mind and Society
By Jeffrey Rubard
For most of the time people have been reading his books, G.W.F. Hegel has been viewed as a weighty but obscure writer expounding a curious story about what truly is: reality, according to this Hegel, makes leaps that transform one type of being into another -- though for the most part this occurs in the way we think about things, reasoned comprehension of the world being the fullest and most important level of existence. Most writers in the Marxist tradition who treat of Hegel, for example, try to show how "Quantity" changes into "Quality" in the material reality they hold as ultimate yet "dialectical" in the manner of Hegel's philosophy (though Hegel himself derives Quantity from Quality in his "logical" writings).

After World War II, this began to change: philosophers like Klaus Hartmann started to stress Hegel's continuity with earlier German Idealists, who were intent on showing that we do not take up reality "just as it is" but remain within the space of our own minds for our entire journey into knowing the world. Terry Pinkard was a student of Hartmann's, and he has been one of the most consistent voices expounding a "non-metaphysical" interpretation of Hegel following on Hartmann's example; *Hegel's Phenomenology: The Sociality of Reason* is one of his major texts, discussing the work of Hegel's that has come to bulk largest in philosophical consciousness, *The Phenomenology of Spirit*.

According to Pinkard, there is almost no traditional metaphysics in the *Phenomenology*: Hegel is simply putting into a systematic form the social forms of justification for what comes to matter to us in our life. This approach makes good sense of the fact that Hegel spends less time in the *Phenomenology* talking about epistemology than he does talking about mores and ways of life throughout Western history, how they founder on internal contradictions and give rise to new, more reflective ways of life. (Even if you are innocent of Hegel, if you have read a fair amount of Richard Rorty you will find these themes familiar.) Although Pinkard gives an adequate characterization of the first four chapters of the *Phenomenology*, where Hegel discusses the mind-dependent character of knowledge, it is in his treatment of "Reason", "Spirit", "Religion" and "Absolute Knowing" -- where Pinkard knowledgeably relates Hegel's views of ancient and modern society, Stoicism and Napoleon -- that the major value of this book rests.

I myself do not think that Hegel is as innocent of metaphysics as Pinkard believes, but the major interest of Hegel as a writer surely rests with his apercus about our ability to rationally think our world as we live in it, and this book is a great help in understanding this major work.

Ruskin's God is the first full-length study of the impact that John Ruskin's religion had on his many and varied writings. Part I, "The Author of Modern Painters," covers the first half of his career, when he was an Evangelical Christian and aimed to teach people how to see paintings, buildings and landscapes. In Part II, "Victorian Solomon," Michael Wheeler shows how in his later writings Ruskin, drawing on ancient wisdom, aimed to teach people how to live.

The Persistence of Ruskin's Religious Impulse
By L. Mazzeno
Michael Wheeler argues convincingly that, despite his own protests to the contrary, John Ruskin was influenced throughout his life by his deepseated belief in a benevolent God. This thesis runs counter to conventional critical opinion that holds Ruskin abandoned religious belief in 1858, and that his later work provides a secular alternative to organized religion.
This work is well researched and intended for other scholars. Even the literate, well-read generalist outside 19th century studies may have difficulty tracing Wheeler's argument, since he references hundreds of works by Ruskin and by those who have written about him in the past century. Nevertheless, the argument is well constructed and should serve as a corrective to the tendency of postmodernist critics to revel in the agnosticism and atheism that pops up in several of Ruskin's writings during the middle years of his career.

Ideas of Slavery from Aristotle to Augustine (The W. B. Stanford Memorial Lectures), by Peter Garnsey

This study, unique of its kind, asks how slavery was viewed by the leading spokesmen of Greece and Rome. There was no movement for abolition in these societies, or a vigorous debate, such as occurred in antebellum America, but this does not imply that slavery was accepted without question. This book draws on a wide range of sources, pagan, Jewish and Christian, over ten centuries, to challenge the common assumption of passive acquiescence in slavery, and the associated view that, Aristotle apart, there was no systematic thought on slavery. The work contains both a typology of attitudes to slavery ranging from critiques to justifications, and paired case studies of leading theorists of slavery, Aristotle and the Stoics, Philo and Paul, Ambrose and Augustine.

This book uses historical primary sources to attempt to explain how slavery was viewed in ancient Greece and Rome. This is no mean task, because the Greek and Roman public conversations generally steered clear of the subject. The result is a typology of classical attitudes towards slavery, ranging from critique to justification, and a careful look at the views of Aristotle, the Stoics, Philo Judaeus and Paul, and Ambrose and Augustine.

'This is a very professional book on a topic of perennial concern ... Bright sixth-formers would benefit from exposure to this book, which shows how much can be gained by tackling ancient history and philosophy together.' JACT Review

'Garnsey gives a fascinating discussion of the history of ideas about slavery, varying from the positive to the doubtful but rarely to the outrightly abolitionist. He also provides the key texts (in translation only), making the book remarkably useful since it gives easy access to some of the patristic passages not otherwise readily available in English.' Journal of Theological Studies

'This book is a fascinating and fundamental statement on its subject ... The evident passion of the work and material referenced in the bibliography and the notes ensure that it is a must not just for students and teachers of ancient social, philosophical and church history, but also for anyone interested in the underpinnings of modern slavery too.' Slavery & Abolition

Great college philosophy text
By Beaver, Columbia SC
I use this as a required reading in my 100-level philosophy course. I love how it appeals to and gives excerpts from original sources (i.e. Aristotle, the stoics, Augustine, etc.) and then also breaks down and explains these original sources. While these readings are sometimes challenging for first-time philosophy students, with class discussion I think this is a great beginner source. The presentation of slavery from an ancient and historical perspective is so important if we really want to understand what has led to the perpetuation of slavery throughout history, and is important in the consideration of what continues to sustain modern slavery. I will be using this text again this fall for the third semester in a row, and I plan to continue using this text as long as I teach my current course on philosophical ideas of slavery.

Very well done
By Michael J. Sopher
This book is a revised and extended version of the W.B. Stamford Lectures given by Dr. Peter Garnsey at Trinity College Dublin in 1995. The author examines ancient Greece and Rome and categorizes his "ideas" of slavery into two large divisions: Attitudes to slavery, and Theories of slavery. The first part, dealing with "attitudes" to slavery, range from critique to justification of the subject. The second part examines the "theories" of Aristotle, the Stoics, Theologians Philo and Paul, Church Fathers Ambrose and Augustine, and others. The author draws his conclusion from these philosophers' own writings and therefore is commended on his excellent research.
The author finds that there was no major movement for abolition in these societies, unlike antebellum America, but one should not conclude that slavery was accepted all together. The problem with this analysis is that a majority of the Roman and Greek societies do not excuse or condemn the subjection of other human beings. In reality, any abolition to slavery was kept private or generally ignored.
Slavery is not an idea but rather a judgment that we are human beings and slaves are not. One can see that our own century has witnessed the terrible consequences of dehumanizing other human beings. An opportunity to compare ancient slavery to modern slavery is completely ignored by the author and for good reason, simply because it would have required an entire different section. In conclusion, the "why" is left for us to contemplate, yet one of Garnsey's achievements is that the thought behind or concerning this matter is so clearly revealed in this book.

Well worth the money if you have the advanced knowledge
By TammyJo Eckhart
If you are looking for an introduction to slavery in the ancient world, do not get this book. To fully understand and use this book, one must not only be knowledgeable of the ancient world but also have a pretty good grasp of the many authors Garnsey looks at. Instead of trying to make some grand generalization about slavery in the Greco-Roman world, this book tries to look at individuals and different "schools of thought" in the ancient world. The result is a nice journey through several ancient texts. However, Garnsey does have an agenda and an opinion: slavery is bad, and even ancients questioned it. The second is true, the first is debatable especially in the ancient world.

Hiroshima in History and MemoryFrom Brand: Cambridge University Press

In this timely collection of essays, prominent historians survey the Hiroshima story from the American decision to drop the first atomic bomb to the recent controversy over the Enola Gay exhibit in Washington, D.C. The first essay surveys the literature on the atomic bombing of Japan, while the second and third essays evaluate the decisions that led to that event. The remaining essays discuss how the Japanese and American people have remembered Hiroshima in the years since the end of World War II. They emphasize the construction of an official memory of Hiroshima, the challenge posed by alternative or counter-memories, and the tension between history and memory in the Hiroshima story. The collection thus unites up-to-date scholarship by diplomatic historians with the recent interest in memory that has emerged as part of the new cultural history.

"...thought-provoking....Instead of demanding an apology from the U.S. for dropping the atomic bombs, Japanese politicians should look at themselves in the mirror and ask America and the rest of the world for forgiveness." The Christian News

"Overall,...this volume is the best available to date on the Enola Gay exhibit." Robert P. Newman, Pacific Historical Review

Collective Memory that Should Never be Forgotten
By R. DelParto
The bombing of Hiroshima was one of many horrific events that occurred in World War II and in human history. World War II was a pivotal time, and only in the present are we able to look back and reflect on the event with a critical eye. Michael J. Hogan's HIROSHIMA IN HISTORY AND MEMORY provides a collection of essays by cultural and diplomatic historians who analyzed the bombing of Hiroshima based on unclassified documents and past commentary that emphasized the how and why the bomb was dropped. Although this historiographical collection is considered revisionist scholarship, it is by all means essential in order to understand the complicated decision that President Truman had to make in dropping the bomb, and the effects it has had decades after.

Several essays reflect on how the bombing has affected commemoration of the event. Without a clear understanding of Hiroshima from both Americans and Japanese, one cannot equally or fully commemorate or represent the bombing of Hiroshima. The essays in HIROSHIMA AND HISTORY AND MEMORY attempts to present the facts within each essay, and each historian, such as J. Samuel Walker, John W. Dower, Barton J. Bernstein, and a host of others emphasize that the decision to drop the bomb and end the war did not only involve justifying saving military casualties, but the fear of an imminent power on the rise -- the Soviet Union (despite their position as an allie at the time, their possible invasion would have helped the Japanese surrender).

HIROSHIMA IN HISTORY AND MEMORY examines basic history as it pertains to the bombing of Hiroshima. The essays are readable and understandable. The events that occurred in August 1945 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are two major historical events that continue to be a discussion of debate.

Public Memory V Private Memory
By Jonathan F Newton
An essential feature of any historical work is the selection ofsources one wishes to present as an argument. The role of memory and access to history, that is public access to 'other' histories, is an area of much contention in the contemporary world. What I most enjoyed about this book is the authors have not shied away from commenting on earlier critiques of the proposed Smithsonian display, involving the restored fuselage of the Enola Gay. What was shameful about the ensuing debacle, I believe, was the attempt to discredit the further development of an alternate memory given 50 years had passed since the atomisation of Hiroshima. After all, was it not possible to show an American and Japanese view of the closing months of the Pacific War, regardless of who the victor was? It is critical to understand that Australians, let alone Japanese, cut a different slant on the way we interpret history, particularly that of Pacific War history. I believe we are richer for the experience.
But, of course, an alternate memory has developed, yet it is often dismissed by the euphemistic expression, 'historical revisionism'. This appears to be some sort of code for 'this sort of history is not acceptable to the conservative elements in contemporary American society, certainly much less to those who actually witnessed combat in the Pacific'. By virtue of fact, it has no legitimate place among orthodox histories. All history is subject to revision, for the simple reason new facts become available and each generation chooses to impose it's own standards. This is certainly the case with Hiroshima. But this shouldn't be construed as 'wrong' or a 'threat', rather it adds to the debate and formation of ideas which underpin the importance of Hiroshima and historiography. Context retains an essential place.
However, for those of you interested in the importance of historicity, of debate, and value the idea of an education as opposed to acccess to information, I cannot recommend this book enough. It has it all. Needless to say Hiroshima touches a raw nerve both in Japan and America. It also has much currency in Australia. So I do not in any way set out to discredit the efforts of those men and women who gave their services to the state during WW2. I do, however, recommend that prospective readers keep an open mind and try avoid getting caught up in the limited rhetoric of the conservative right and the emotional left.

Education, Economic Change and Society in England 1780-1870 (New Studies in Economic and Social History), by Michael Sanderson

In recent years the study of the history of education has flourished and expanded. It has moved from being a specialist interest to one that concerns economic and social historians, who see that education has played a central part in the discussion of industrial development and the formation of the social structure. In this study, revised and updated throughout, Dr. Sanderson reviews the history of education in the nineteenth century and the academic debates surrounding it. He examines the discussion surrounding literacy, its trends and significance in the creation of an industrial labor force, and considers the successful development of a middle-class scientific culture in the eighteenth-century and the relative failure to develop technical education in the nineteenth.

Defining the Victorian Nation: Class, Race, Gender and the British Reform Act of 1867, by Catherine Hall, Keith McClelland, Jane Rendall

Defining the Victorian Nation offers a fresh perspective on one of the most significant pieces of legislation in nineteenth-century Britain. Hall, McClelland and Rendall demonstrate that the Second Reform Act was marked by controversy about the extension of the vote, new concepts of masculinity and the masculine voter, the beginnings of the women's suffrage movement, and a parallel debate about the meanings and forms of national belonging. Fascinating illustrations illuminate the argument, and a detailed chronology, biographical notes and a selected bibliography offer further support to the student reader.

"Hall (Univ. College, London), McClelland (Middlesex), and Rendall (York) break the mold of traditional political history...by analyzing the Reform Act in the light of new political history...this book is a pioneering study that broadens our view of Victorian politics. Graduate students and scholars will find the book invaluable." Choice

"This as a careful, detailed, and convincing book that stands up surprisingly well as a discrete entity" Albion

"...this is a text admirably suited to undergraduates and junior postgraduates...[it] provides extremely lucid accounts of a range of significant movements and episodes...The volume is relatively generously, if conventionally, illustrated with line drawings from the Illustrated London News and cartoons from Punch. Getting the Vote
By W Boudville
A historically important step on the road to universal suffrage in Britain was the passage of the Reform Act of 1867. At possibly the peak of the British Empire, the franchise was quite limited. Half the population, women, could not vote. Of the men, you had to own property worth above a certain amount, or you had to pay above another amount in annual rent. Plus the district in which you could vote might be of vastly different size in electorate compared to another district.
As Britain industrialised, the cities grew, as did the educated populations therein. By the 1860s, a thriving educated working and middle class had arisen. This book describes their increasing awareness of their disenfranchisement and their consequent struggles to get the vote. The ratcheting up of social tensions and their manifestations in Parliament and on the streets is recounted. But unlike a history text written in, say, 1910, there is more analysis made of the role of the women's movement, the Free Irish, and the class tensions between the skilled artisans and the middle class. All these were factors which publicly preceded and culminated in the passage of the Reform Act.
The authors give an eloquent analysis of events that most Americans are unfamiliar with, inasmuch as the contemporary events here were the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Henry James' Last Romance: Making Sense of the Past and the American Scene (Cambridge Studies in American Literature and Culture), by Beve

In this major new study of Henry James' classic text of cultural criticism, The American Scene, Beverly Haviland shows how James confronted the vexing problem of making sense of the past so that he could make culture work. In this record of his 1904-5 return to America and in his unfinished novels, The Sense of the Past and The Ivory Tower, he interpreted the social conflicts that seemed to be paralyzing relations between men and women, between black and white Americans, between "natives" and "aliens," between defenders of taste and censors of waste. Haviland's own method brings historical and theoretical readings into conversation with each other.

A thorough, if disjointed, history of the later Ottoman empire
By MarkK
With a history spanning over six centuries, the Ottoman empire defies easy historical assessment. The frontier state of medieval times is naturally and necessarily different from the empire that survived at the start of the twentieth century. This poses a challenge for any historian, whose attempts to assimilate the enormous amount of information about these centuries invariably requires a degree of specialization that leaves them stronger on some areas than on others.

One of the methods of addressing this in a survey is to subdivide the work, bringing specialists to bear on their topics and then presenting it as a whole. This is the approach taken by this book, the second of two volumes surveying the social and economic history of the empire. Whereas the first volume, An Economic and Social History of the Ottoman Empire (Economic & Social History of the Ottoman Empire) (Volume 1), was the solitary product of the great Ottoman historian Halil Inalcik, the second volume contains the work of four scholars, each of whom brings their expertise to bear upon a selected period or topic: Suraiya Faroqhi writes on the eleven decades between 1590 and 1699 C.E., Bruce McGowan covers the years between 1699 and 1812, and Donald Quataert addresses the "age of reforms" that stretches between 1812 and 1914. Sevket Pamuk contributes a final chapter on money in the Ottoman empire, which examines its development over the entire span of Ottoman history.

Such a presentation can have both advantages and disadvantages, as this volume amply demonstrates. The various sections are solid works of scholarship, each of which contain a great deal of specialized information that demonstrates a comprehensive (though in some cases dated) knowledge of the literature on the periods. Yet despite the best efforts of the editors, each section stands alone, frustrating an easy narrative about the social and economic history of the period. Readers seeking an introduction to Ottoman history would be better off starting with a general work such as Quataert's The Ottoman Empire, 1700-1922 (New Approaches to European History) before tackling this detailed and sophisticated examination of the broader socio-economic forces at work in the empire's long history.

Misleading advertising for this book.
By Stephen O'Rourke
I have yet to read the book but was extremely disappointed to find it was only one part of a two part item. It was (is) misleading not to have this information in the 'ad'. I guess I will now have to find the other volume.
