The vocabulary includes nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs as well as idiomatic phrases that will help you perfect your skills.

Of course, no such book is complete, but the format provides plenty of space for you to insert your own findings as you read and look up more specific words in a good dictionary. Nevertheless, each topic will provide you with plenty of interesting and diverse ways of expressing yourself---be it in an essay or in a conversation. My one fault with the book is its lack of an English to French Index in a smaller font as an appendix. Otherwise, recommended heartily as one of the best French learning guides I have.

Surprising Weaknesses In a Text From Cambridge

The vocabulary study lists offered by this text are quite comprehensive in a wide-ranging assortment of subject categories, but what seems curious is the fact that these extensive word listings are not alphabetized in either French or English thus making them very time-consuming to use as a quick reference. Don't throw out your dicos.

Something I find most helpful are exercises which call for making careful distinctions between closely related words such as 'la nappe' and 'la serviette' or 'un caillou' and 'un galet' for example. There are also interesting challenges on idiomatic expressions though a number of these appear to be very uncommon indeed, since my other resources, which are extensive, fail to note them at all. While the text does offer the correct French format to these expressions in the answer keys it does not explain the English language equivalent, so occasionally one is left with an expression at hand and uncertainty as to how it might be properly employed.

The most important exercises seem to me to be those involving translating from English into French and literary passages and newspaper articles which are to be translated from the original French into English. There are answer keys for the former but, frustratingly, none for the latter - a major flaw in this text to my estimation. It would be helpful to see how one's own hard copy translation stacks up against that of a professional translator, especially for the extracts from French literature. As for the English to French sentences, it would also have been a nice touch, I think, to key these sentences to a reference grammar such as the CUP's own Advanced French Grammar by Monique l'Huillier. One complaint I have about the translation sentences is that they express things in a fashion highly unlikely to be used in a casual setting. More practical sample sentences to work with would seem to be called for.

As for the essay writing assignments, they will be of little use to the self-study student unless he or she can make connection with someone to proofread their efforts.

It would be nice to see this text pre-packaged with one of the many helpful flashcard programs that are available. I personally find flashcards very helpful, especially the computer variety, in developing both passive and active vocabulary. Given the extensive vocabulary lists which it offers, this text would be a perfect match for such a software product.

I wish I could rate this text more highly, but there are simply too many typos, mistranslations and at least one translation excerpt attributed to an incorrect source - an extract attributed to Madame Bovary which is actually from Flaubert's l'Éducation sentimentale. Surprising errors in a text from the usually careful Cambridge University Press.

The groundwork is laid here for a well-coordinated textbook approach to teaching students to express things properly in French. More focus and less scattershot on driving home sentence structure, flashcard software, a reference grammar tie-in on a per chapter basis along with providing professional translations of the literary extracts would all constitute fine additions to making this a much-improved self-study package for the adult home-learner.

Extensive but prefer another style

I like the fact that this book is intensive. I mean it does offer you a large selection of vocabulary. However, I would prefer a smaller list if there were more examples of sentences... Of course, you are expected to construct your own.... I would say it is useful, but I need something more practical for my learning style. But it is a good addition for your French library, and I got it at a bargain price..

Not what I expected

For the purposes of this book, culture is defined as the arts, so the essays by various authors included in this book deal with literature, theater, dance, painting, etc., which could be very interesting, but not in this case. I got the impression that the essays were all examples of experts showing off how expert they are; very dry, lacking emotion, failing to inspire or excite. Too analytical, all head and no heart. For an excellent book on the modern life, living, arts, politics and all of Spain is "The New Spaniards" by John Hooper.

Solid Introduction to Spanish Culture

This work is a comprehensive volume, well written, that examines the various strata of recent Spanish Culture. Unlike a previous reviewer, who seemed shocked at the notion that this work should include literature, art and music as "culture", I find it provides an adequate cross-section of various genres and media. This is not a "travel guide" or a touchy-feely "insider's guide" to Spain, but a serious scholarly introduction to the men and women who have defined Spanish culture in the 20th century. If you are looking for information on tapas, look elsewhere; if you want to know how the Spanish civil war impacted the arts, this is for you.

It is concise, clear, easy to read and comprehensive for all, students, professors and scientists. The informations help to define, describe and characterize types and groups of functional plants. It is so much important to the understanding of functioning of biomes and auxiliate to the monitoring the vegetation with accuracy. It is a fundamental and required reading for all that are interested in develop models for maintain the plant biodiversity, monitoring and global climate changes through the plant functional types/groups. I recommend it!

Where does "obligation" come from?

In this brilliant work, Christine Korsgaard tackles her title topic with flair and vigor: What are the sources of normativity? How is it that we become morally obliged? Drawing heavily on Kant but also striking out on her own, Korsgaard locates the origin of obligation in the ability to reflect, and in particular to reflect upon oneself as an agent in the pursuit of ends (a "citizen of the Kingdom of Ends").
Her view is at heart a modification of Kant, and she is careful to explain both what her approach shares with Kant's and exactly what her departure consists of. (Basically, finding some versions of "reflective endorsement" untenable, she finds that she must modify Kant's abstract principle of universalizability to take account of our need for practical identity.)
There might seem to be a difficulty here in that (as one other reviewer has noted in somewhat different language) agents who are _not_ (sufficiently) reflective might seem thereby to avoid moral obligation altogether. However, Korsgaard does deal with this point and does at least leave us a way to say that agents ideally _ought_ to be reflective. In that sense, the agent who simply shrugs off the pain he is causing to another can still, on Korsgaard's theory, be said to be reneging on an obligation. (And I think we _would_ say that "obligation" could obtain no purchase at all on someone who was simply incapable of any reflection whatsoever.)
At any rate, whether Korsgaard's analysis is found to be satisfactory or not, it makes highly rewarding reading. Her theory is not only trenchantly presented but developed through an enlightening discussion of the history of ethical theory.
Moreover, the text also includes responses/critiques from Thomas Nagel, G.A. Gohen, Bernard Williams, and Raymond Guess, with a final wrapup reply from Korsgaard (the entire volume is adapted from a lecture series). And that helpful feature means that certain important criticisms are made available to the reader at once, together with Korsgaard's responses thereto.
(By the way, her arguments with one or two of the other contributors will be clearer to the reader who is familiar with _Creating the Kingdom of Ends_. For example, her disagreements with Nagel over agent-relative vs. agent-independent reasons are discussed in "The Reasons We Can Share." And contrary to what one of the other reviewers seems to believe, both Korsgaard and Nagel have devoted sustained attention to the question of how "reasons for you" are also "reasons for me." Merely announcing that "they aren't" is a way not of solving the problem but of refusing to address it.)
All in all, then, this is a fine piece of work on the part of Korsgaard and all her interlocutors. There is some excellent ethical reasoning in this volume, and even readers who wind up disagreeing with Korsgaard's solution will appreciate her fair and careful treatment of the problem.

An Important Theory of Practical Reason

Korsgaard' book is one of the boldest and most thoughtful treatments of the philosophical problems around practical reason. The author has a wide knowledge and a deep understanding of the history of the subject, but she is also a daring and original thinker, and so whether or not her theory is entirely correct (what theory is?) it will deservedly attract enormous attention and scrutiny for years to come. The comments and reply attached at the end are also of very high quality, and it is good to have such good criticism appear immediately in this way. Everything here is well written, but it will be difficult going for any readers who don't have some prior acquaintance with previous treatments of the issues discussed, such as the relation between reason and desire, the difference between explaining and justifying action, the difference between rational and moral normativity, etc. But her vivid style makes it more accessible than much professionally produced philosophy, so if the issues interest you, give it a try!

Admirably well written and inspiring

The Sources of Normativity is an admirably well written and inspiring book. Korsgaard's style will capture the reader right from the beginning of the Prologue.

In this book Christine Korsgaard is mainly concerned with justifying morality. Her aim is not to tell us what to do, i.e. which moral obligations we have, but rather to show that we do indeed have moral obligations, that we are in fact bound by morality. Korsgaard, having discussed various accounts of the sources of normativity and shown them to be inadequate, gives her own Kantian answer to the question, focusing on the roles we play and our role as human beings. I won't go into details here.

I myself am inclined to disagree with Korsgaard's theory, but it doesn't matter, I still love this book. It is both thought provoking and inspiring, and it's just so beautifully written. It is truly a pleasure to read.

Korsgaard sets out her theory in four lectures (in addition to the Prologue) which are then followed by responses from four distinguished philosophers: G.A. Cohen, Raymond Geuss, Thomas Nagel and Bernard Williams. Korgaard then gives her reply in a final chapter. There is also a very short introduction by Onora O'Neill.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in philosophy, and especially if you're interested in moral philosophy.
