A very fine introduction to the works and themes of Johnson.

The challenge of segregating Johnson's works into their themes and forms must have been daunting, but Greg Clingham and the several writers who contributed to this edition have done a marvelous job of providing an introduction to Johnson and his works. Chapters examine his poetry, his essays, his Dictionary, his attitudes towards religion, and women... This book will be appreciated by beginning and intermediate Johnsonians, and should be read.

Two Books-Not One

This book is a melding of two books-A Journy to the Western Islands of Scotland by Samuel Johnson and The Journal of a Tour to the Herrides with Samuel Johnson LL.D by James Boswell. Although these are two of the best writers of English Literature and Boswell is known mostly for his biography of Sameul Johnson, I cannot recommend this book. On the left pages of this book are Boswell's description of traveling with Johnson and on the right pages are Dr.. Johnson's description of the trip. The two really do not meld. I recommend the reader purchase inexpensive paperback editions(Oxford World Classics prints both works) of each title and read both. I feel the reader will get more from both works this way-they are both great artists.

These and other more traditional lines of enquiry are the focus of this book. The usual comprehensive bibliography of the previous year's publications in all branches of Anglo-Saxon studies rounds off the book.

This book delightfully serves its purpose as a companion by offering a complete, detailed, and engaging look at a variety of aspects dealing with this genre called the medieval romance. Usefully organized in a roughly chronological order, beginning with the romance's origins in France and its relations to other types of literature, the included essays--all by top scholars in their fields of study--closely examine the material aspects of the romance tradition (manuscripts and the like) as well as the broader thematic issues that emerge, including treatments of the supernatural and of women. Part Three deals with the romance tradition as it developed throughout western Europe and went on to inspire later prose works, most importantly the Don Quixote of Cervantes. Footnotes are usefully included at the ends of chapters (rather than the end of the book, which reduces page-flipping) and include suggestions for further reading. A lengthy bibliography at the back leads curious readers to further editions and criticism, and the index is very complete. The Cambridge companions are of a universal high quality, but this one in particular shows a coherency of style and clarity that the non-specialist can greatly appreciate. This is a book I keep within handy reaching-distance of my desk.

About the Author
Bernard Rosenthal has written widely on American literature and culture. His monographs include City of Nature and Salem Story, and he has edited published volumes, including an updated edition of The Oregon Trail by Francis Parkman, Jr. He is also the author of numerous articles and reviews. Rosenthal has received two grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, one shared with Benjamin Ray, and a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in support of this book. Rosenthal was also a Fulbright lecturer in 1996 -7 at Tampere University in Finland. Rosenthal edited this volume in collaboration with an international group of ten Associate Editors.

Albert Gelpi is Professor Emeritus of American Literature at Stanford University, California. His previous books include Emily Dickinson: The Mind of the Poet, The Tenth Muse, and A Coherent Splendor. Gelpi has also edited the work of, and written criticism on, a wide range of poets, including Wallace Stevens, Robinson Jeffers, Adrienne Rich, Denise Levertov, Robert Duncan, and William Everson. The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov, co-edited with Robert Bertholf, won an award from the MLA as the best scholarly edition of a literary correspondence. Gelpi continues to teach in the Stanford Continuing Studies Program.

A cogent,fresh, and essentialstudy of the original materials

This is an original piece of scholarship that for the first time corrects numerous errors in both the popular and scholarly traditions about what went on in Salem in 1692. Rosenthal makes judgments while giving us enough of the historical record to allow us to assess the wisdom of these judgments. Future studies will have to take account of this compelling work.

Eye-opening read

Although I grew up less than an hour from Salem (and took the obligatory school trips there as a kid), I really knew very little about the witch trials until I stumbled upon Bernard Rosenthal's Salem Story. The author's extensive research and enjoyable narrative made for an excellent read. Simply put, I learned a lot and I'm glad I read the book.

A must-read for every serious scientific programmer

I've never read a book like this before. It teaches you very complex
algorithms *and* how to prove their correctness *and* their concrete
implementation in C++ *and* how to prove the correctness of the given
implementation *and* how to speed up the implementation *and* the
proper use of the fantastic LEDA-library *and* the underlying object
oriented design *and* how to do fine software engineering.
I've really read every single line of this book, even every single
line of code and I'm filled with enthusiasm. It is definitely a
must-read for every scientific programmer who wishes to improve his
style of programming, the correctness and speed of his code, his time
spent for coding, or who just wants to learn about the most important data
structures and their implementation and how to borrow them from the
award winning LEDA library instead of inventing the wheel twice.
This book finishes the time of boring pseudocode lyricists who teach
you how and why an algorithm and his data structures work, but not how
you can *get* them to work.

Essential for those who are interested in LEDA

LEDA library is one of the best library ever built to combine efficient data structures with extensive algorithms, ( ). Particularly the readability of the code is one of the best. This book is essential for those who want to know more about LEDA and the theory behind it. From the point of view of a computational geometer, the book shows a nice and detailed presentation of the theory and its implementation in practice. Especially I like the pseudo code part in the book.
