Not terribly useful

As an overview of C18th Brit lit this collection falls below the usual Camb Comp mark. Most of the essays are interesting but they're a bit too specific in their arguments and so don't give the broad sense of the age that some of this series other titles do. The essay on Rochester is particularly disappointing.

Walking and knowing the path

I have given this full marks because studying it is a deeply moving experience for me. However, the book has no star maps, a serious omission because much of the poem and even some of the commentary is mumbo jumbo without an aid to visualization. For example, the commentary often provides star co-ordinates, such as constellation alpha, beta etc, and even touches on star magnitudes. However, any good amateur astronomy book should cover this lapse.

As they say, there is a difference between walking a path and knowing the path. If astronomy is knowing the stars, the poem 'Phaenomena' is a walk through them. But the walk is a stumble without guidance, in this case provided by Kidd's text, supplemented with star maps. It has enabled me to appreciate not only the ancient popularity of this poem but, by extension, all didactic poetry.

As with other texts in this Cambridge series, the scholarship is impeccable. Kidd provides a bibliography as long as your fat aunt's panties, with excellent background material on the poet's history and prosody, the manuscript tradition etc, and his line by line commentary deals with textual, historical and astronomical issues in good, clear English. It is a bit expensive but worth every cent.

About the Author
Richard E. Blahut is the Henry Magnuski Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the recipient of many awards including the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal (1998), the Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award, and the IEEE Millennium Medal. He was named a Fellow of IBM Corporation in 1980 (where he worked for over 30 years) and was elected to the US National Academy of Engineering in 1990.

Channel Coding gone wild

I used this textbook for an introduction to Channel Coding class I took (graduate level). I think that the material is difficult, but this book is remarkably clear, considering that. I had no experience with Galois Fields or any of that kind of math before starting with this book, but I was able to grasp it. I think the main thing missing in this book are good summaries for each chapter, giving highlights of the important stuff. Sometimes it's hard to get an overall picture of the material, I got bogged down in math sometimes. Visually, the book is beautiful, good fonts, charts, etc...

A deep grasp of algebraic coding theory

The book is well organized and mathematically rigorous. It depicts a full picture of conventional algebraic coding theory in a systematic fashion. As a specialist in coding theory, I give my highest rank.

A Tough Slog

At first I really liked this book, but the farther I progressed, the more confusing it got. By the time I got to somthing practical, I was completely lost. A couple of times, when I was having trouble understanding something, I went back and re-read a preceding chapter, but that was not enough. I was reading this on my own, rather than in a class, so I had nobody to ask for clarification when something was confusing. Maybe it would be okay in a course.
For the theorems, he doesn't state the asssumption. Instead, the reader is expected to know them because of the variable names. For example, because "p" was chosen to represent a prime number at some point in the book, I think that it is always a prime number from then on. However, he never stated that this is the case, so I'm not sure it is true. Sometimes a variable would start off fairly general, but he would add some assumptions about it for a later theorem. For subsequent uses of that variable, I would not know whether the variable was being used in its more general or more specific sense. The uncertainty about the meanings of variables just got to be too much for me.
A glossary would be helpful. In particular, it would be great to have a list of all the meanings of "primitive".

About the Author
Jürgen M. Meisel is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics in the Department of Romance Languages and a member and former Chair (1999-2006) of the Research Center on Bilingualism at the University of Hamburg. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Distinguished Fellow in the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Calgary. He is one of the founding editors and current co-editor of the journal Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, published by Cambridge University Press.

About the Author
Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

Stanley J. Tambiah is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 1954. He joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he taught for ten years, and was a Fellow of King's College. He went to the University of Chicago in 1973, and moved to Harvard Univesity in 1976. He began field work in Sri Lanka (1956-59), the island of his birth, and and later worked in Thailand. He is the author of eight books.
