a very good reading

The perfect balance between physics and philosophy, getting to the social dimension of scientific quest its deserved place (usually ovelooked by many scientists, advocates of a (too) strong concept of rationality in science). I liked especially the chapters dedicated to modern physics, underdetermination and theory ladenness are really big problems for modern science, in no case are we entitled to underestimate them (I don't think that Bayesianism, objective or subjective, is enough to reject them). Overall a good reading, especially for those having some previous knowledge of physics, it shows clearly that one must go well beyond the usual cliche that science is only inductive and that we have enough probabilistic justification for the view that it surely approach at least approximate Truth.

Lots of Physics...No Philosophy

This work reads more like a general overview of the history of ideas regarding the physical universe rather than a philosophical treatment of the ideas behind physics. The book merely presents in a linear fashion the major ideas that revolutionized our views of the physical world but goes no further than presenting the theories as matter of fact. There are no discussions into the interplay between the philosophy of ideas and the actual modeling of the physical world using the scientific method. It reads similar to Stephen Hawking's "On The Shoulders of Giants"(a much more interesting work).

More like History of Physics

My be I was expecting more from the book based on the title of the book but after all I was satisfied. Author provides a good history of Physics from Greeks to Quantum Theory. In Quantum theory you feel some Philosophical discussions but otherwise it is a science book and a good one with formulas, schematics like a text book. What I liked most was the excerpts from the original writings as the author was making his point. Paragraph from Newton's, Kepler's , Maxwell's, Bohr's, Bell's writings, all those fellows. It is serious book and requires serious reading. Also there is good references for further readings.

A GAP-FILLER

On one level this is disappointing compared with, say, the Oxford companions to various subjects, being a series of detailed essays that leave large gaps between them. But taken along with Baines's classic, it documents a lot of significant stuff, notably the role of brasswinds in avant garde music. Don't buy it first -- but do buy it second (if only because this is a field whose entire available English-language literature is feweer than a dozen books)

Definitive String Algorithms Text

If you like definition-theorem-proof-example and exercise books, Gusfield's book is the definitive text for string algorithms. The algorithms are abstracted from their biological applications, and the book would make sense without reading a single page of the biological motivations. Gusfield aims his book at readers who are fluent in basic algorithms and data structures (at the level of Cormen, Leisersohn and Rivest's excellent text). The exercises are wonderfully illustrative, being neither trivial nor impossible.
All of the major exact string algorithms are covered, including Knuth-Morris-Pratt, Boyer-Moore, Aho-Corasick and the focus of the book, suffix trees for the much harder probem of finding all repeated substrings of a given string in linear time. In addition to exact string matching, there are extensive discussions of inexact matching. Even the discussions of widely known topics like dynamic programming for edit distance are insightful; for instance, we find how to easily cut space requirements from quadratic to linear. There is also a short chapter on semi-numerical matching methods, which are also of use in information retrieval applications. Inexact matching is extended to the threshold all-against-all problem, which finds all substrings of a string that match up to a given edit distance threshold. The theoretical development concludes with the much more difficult problem of aligning multiple sequences with ultrametric trees, with applications to phylogenetic alignment for evolutionary trees (an approach that has also been applied to the evolution of natural languages).
Note that there is no discussion of statistical string matching. For that, Durbin, Eddy, Krogh and Mitchison's "Biological Sequence Analysis: Probabilistic Models of Proteins and Nucleic Acides" is a good choice, or for those more interested in language than biology, Manning and Schuetze's "Statistical Natural Language Processing". There is also no information on more structured string matching models such as context-free grammars, as are commonly used to analyze RNA folding or natural language syntax. Luckily, Durbin et al. and Manning and Schuetze also provide excellent coverage of these higher-order models in their books.
This book is not about efficient implementation. If you need to build these algorithms, you'll also need to know how to write efficient code and tune it for your needs. This is an algorithms book, pure and simple.
As a computer scientist, I found the discussions of computational biology to be more enlightening than in other textbooks on similar topics such as Durbin et al., because Gusfield does not assume the reader has any background in cellular biology. Instead, he provides his own clear and gentle introductions illustrated with algorithms, applications, open problems and extensive references. Like most Cambridge University Press books, this one is beautifully typeset and edited.

Excellent...but dense

This textbook gives a rigorous introduction to the algorithms of computational biology from the standpoint of theoretical computer science. It does however give the reader an overview of the practical application of these algorithms to the subject. The author gives a very detailed discussion of the most important results in the field, but the book is very dense: there are 228 definitions, 127 theorems, 490 references, and over 400 exercises that both illustrate the topics in the book and extend them. The author omits any real source code, but does give a URL where code for many of the algorithms can be found.
The author restricts his attention to deterministic approaches to string matching and comparison, and thus there is no treatment of hidden Markov models or Monte Carlo methods. The major algorithms such as the Aho-Corasick, Boyer-Moore, Knuth-Morris-Pratt, Needleman-Winsch, and Smith-Waterman are discussed and brilliantly motivated in the book. The author employs very effective diagrams to illustrate the matching concepts that are detailed in the book.
The book does require some time to read but it is worth the effort. Also, the exercises can be challenging but some should he done in order to understand the concepts in the book. The empirical results of the algorithms as sequence databases are also included, with FASTA, BLAST, BLOCKS, BLOSUM, and PROSITE are discussed in detail. The chapter that discusses these is the least mathematical of all the ones in the book and was no doubt included to connect the reader with real-world applications of the techniques in the book.
The last quarter of the book is a lot more trendy than the rest, with emphasis placed on algorithms for physical mapping, fragment assembly, and phylogenetic trees. These algorithms of course take on particular importance today given the Human Genome and other gene sequencing projects. Radiation-hybrid mappings, direct sequencing, and shotgun DNA sequencing are discussed in one of the chapters in this section, and the author addresses in great detail some approaches to speeding up sequence assembly. In the discussion on shotgun DNA sequencing the author refrains from any probabilistic analysis, instead referring the reader to the references. This omission goes along with the rest of the book, where probabilistic methods are not used, which is a little disappointing since these have shown great promise in computational biology. The exercises at the end of the chpater are very interesting and it is worth spending time working some of them through.
In a later chapter, the solution of the satisfiability problem in mathematical logic is discussed and shown to be solved (at least theoretically) by DNA-based computing. The quantities of DNA needed to carry out the computation are shown to be infeasible by the author.
This book will no doubt be of great assistance to those interested in the more rigorous approaches to computational biology. But the best attribute of the book is that one gets the impression that the author had a good time writing it, and that shows through in this very important book.

If you haven't read this book, you don't know biological string matching. The book's focus is clearly on string algorithms, but the author gives good biological significance to the problems that each technique solves. I came away from this book understanding the algorithms, but also knowing why the algorithms were valuable.
No, there isn't any real source code here. That should not be a problem - this book aims above the cut&paste programmer. The book in meant for readers who can not only understand the algorithms, but apply them to unique solutions in unique ways.
String matching is far too broad a topic for any one book to cover. The study can include formal language theory, Gibbs sampling and other non-deterministic optimizations, and probability-based techniques like Markov models. The author chose a well bounded region of that huge territory, and covers the region expertly. The reader will soon realize, though, that algorithms from this book work well as pieces of larger computations. The book's chosen limits certainly do not limit its applicability.
By the way, don't let the biological orientation put you off. DNA analysis is just one place where string-matching problems occur. The author motivates algorithms with problems in biology, but the techniques are applicable by anyone that analyzes strings.

For those who want to understand what shame is, how it differs from guilt and other estranged aspects of the psychological self this is a great book. If you have a tendancy to feel uncomfortable when complimented, or given a gift, or praised then reading SHAME will help you understand why you feel that discomfort.

The Best Book on Shame

I went through a period of obsession with the concept of shame and read everything I could get my hands on. This is by far the best book on shame. It combines a solid theoretical basis with useful therapizing helps for dealing with shame.
After reading this book, I read two other books by Stephen Pattison and I've become a fan. Shame:... is by far the most human of his books; the others are a bit more dry and you don't get such a sense of the humanity of the author, but nonetheless are excellent books.

In a democracy, the problem of fair division of goods is fundamental. It is, for example, what's lurking behind contemporary discussions of affirmative action, divorce law, and even of Medicare and Social Security. Its flip-side problem--burden-sharing--which is implicated in such issues as taxation and the draft, is likewise central. The authors, one a political scientist, the other a mathematician, start with an analysis of the well-known cake-cutting paradigm of "I cut, you choose" and gradually soup it up into a model capable of accommodating situations in which there are more than two parties, or more than one good. They emphasize division procedures that are not only proportional (that give each of n claimants a 1/n share of the good), but that also have the psychological property of being "envy-free"; that is, producing allocations in which each participant thinks (often wrongly, obviously) that he received the largest portion.

A comprehensive resource, easily read

This was easily the book I referred to most in my Master's paper on fair division. It covers a lot of topics, including envy-free and equitable division, fair division by auctions, and fair division by elections. The authors devote a chapter to their favorite method, the so-called "combined procedure" that is equitable, envy-free, and Pareto-optimal for two players and would be invaluable to any divorce lawyer.
For those accustomed to reading mathematics or economics, this book is readable. For the layperson, it might be a little bit too technical in spots. While it has many practical examples, it isn't really a fair division manual for the do-it-yourselfer. But it's as close as you're going to get, for now.

Something Worderful is Going to Happen

Steven Brams and Alan Taylor accomplish something quite interesting and worth paying attention to. They move concepts traditionally treated in policy debate and law with simple hit-or-miss human judgment and discretion into concrete analyzable mathematical processes. In the more than ten years that I've worked on the mathematics of child support, I have not yet been so convincing that such a transformation from subjective into objective is possible. Let the games continue!

About the Author
Roy Porter is Professor of the Social History of Medicine at the Wellcome Institute for the History of Medicine, and author of a number of books including London: A Social History.

David C. Lindberg is Hilldale Professor Emeritus of the History of Science and past director of the Institute for Research in the Humanities at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has written or edited a dozen books on topics in the history of medieval and early modern science, including The Beginnings of Western Science (1992). He and Ronald L. Numbers have previously coedited God and Nature: Historical Essays on the Encounter between Christianity and Science (1986) and When Science and Christianity Meet (2003). A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science, he has been a recipient of the Sarton Medal of the History of Science Society, of which he is also past president (1994 5).

Ronald L. Numbers is Hilldale Professor Emeritus of the History of Science and Medicine at the University of Wisconsin Madison.

too much chatter...

Ok, so McCauley does succeed in utilizing very useful techniques such as integrability, phase flows, etc., in his book which gets you thinking in terms of concepts every grad student should know that is applicable to many different areas in physics. But, he needs to do a couple of things, that I can think of off the top of my head, to make his book better:
1) When I bought the book, I paid for it to learn physics, not to hear him bash the Catholic Church and his thoughts on the multi-causal nature of what factors may have hindered the progress of science throughout history, such as in the 1st chapter. Stick with physics buddy! A Carl Sagan he is not. Also the grammar needs some serious work. Sometimes his sentences are not technically sentences. In fact, I don't know what they are, but grammar is not his virtue.
2) GET YOUR INDICES RIGHT!!! There are way too many errors which is confusing for a student learning this for the first time.
3) If you are going to copy problems out of Goldstein, at least copy them correctly. Basically, there is serious revision that needs to occur b/c there are way too many typos.
Besides that, I like his approach...it's modern and interesting, but things could be organized better. Basically, I think you are better starting off with Goldstein and then using McCauley for reference if you plan to do non-linear dynamics etc., later on in your physics career!

Not recommended as a mechanics text

Unfortunately, McCauley fails to meet the stated goal of this book as "... an advanced text for first-year graduate students in physics and engineering taking a standard classical mechanics course." The perspective presented by McCauley would be enlightening, were it not for this book's significant flaws. Foremost, the number of mistakes in equations, diagrams, problems, and the text presents an obstacle to understanding. The book appears to have been published without review by an editor, let alone one with a knowledge of mechanics. To be fair, some of the descriptions are lucid and well written, specifically some sections on flows in phase space, but generally topics seem to be incompletely, though sometimes verbosely, presented. The problems, often lifted from other sources, poorly illustrate the concepts and methods presented. Furthermore, the book suffers from a poor index which limits its usefulness as a reference. Given the flaws, I cannot recommend the use of this book as a text nor reference.

Must Read On "Integrability"

This book provides an excellent discussion of "integrability" which dispells some confusions that exist about this subject. The style is accessible and the book does not require years of study of differential geometry before reading. My only complaint is that sometimes the discussion drags on longer than I like; a more concise presentation could be made in places. However, this is a minor quibble and a prolonged discussion is definitely less of a defect than an abstract, poorly explained discussion that one finds in too many other books.
