Essential reading for anyone interested in health

An essential read for anyone interested in their own health, or the health of others. Cleverly written to ensure that all levels of readers from novices to medical experts will enhance their knowledge and understanding of how the body fights and recovers from disease. It covers the basic functioning of the immune system and leads on to discussing leading edge issues such as the fight against AIDS, cancer and the role of vaccines and vaccinations. I thoroughly enjoyed, and benefited from reading this book, and whole-heartedly recommend it to others.

Essential reading for the seriuos student of strategy.

The purpose of "The Making of Strategy" is to give the reader an insight into how strategy has been made in the past. This is done through various historical case studies which range from Ancient Greece to American Cold War nuclear policy. Each essay tries to show events from the perspectives of those who were involved and attempts to get inside the mindset of the people who had to forumlate and then implement the various strategies.
As has been stated, the essays span a considerable time period, though there is perhaps (definitely in fact) a weighting towards 20th century strategy. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing is probably dependant upon the reader's personal taste but I didn't have a problem with it.
The quality of the essays is invariably of a very high quality and the contributors are leaders in the field of Strategic Studies (Colin Gray, Donald Kagan, Eliot Cohen, the late Michael Handel, Williamson Murray, Macgregor Knox etc). Standout chapters include Holger Herwig's withering analysis of Imperial German strategy in the post-Bismarck period and (by virtue both of quality and of the fact that it tackles a relatively obscure and much neglected power's policy) Brian Sullivan's chapter on Italian grand strategy in the build-up to the First World War.
The chapters (excluding the excellent and extensive introduction and conclusion) cover the following periods;

- Chinese Strategy from the 14th to the 17th centuries

Aside from the fact that the quality of the chapters is of a very high standard, the great virtue of this book is the way in which it looks into the way nations have made strategy, rather than dealing with specific strategic theories or trying to provide a guide on how strategy should be made (lessons drawn from history aside). It illustrates clearly the frustrations, the balancing of interests, the difficulty in seeing the big picture, the weighing up of ends and means and the FRICTION that plagues policymakers when they put the books away and actually have to make the magic happen.
This book should be read by anybody with a serious interest in Strategic/War Studies. It's a little gem. At over 600 pages, you get your money's worth too.

"The Making of Strategy" examines the strategy-making processes through the cultural, social, political, organisational and historical ( not just the military ) lenses, starting from the Peloponnesian Wars to the Nuclear Age. The book is also excellent in inrtoducing the concept of Weltanschauung; how a nation's strategic choices are often products of its strategic culture. This helps the reader to understand that despite advances in military technologies; why most wars are fought the way they are fought. Very easy reading and excellent book on the little known process of how strategy is often made.

Authoritative, Fascinating, Challenging

Three books on our solar system appeared in the past year or so. Each has its own "flavor." I will review them in turn, but browsers should be aware of the others, so they are listed here: See also, "The New Solar System," J. Kelly Beatty, Carolyn Collins Petersen, Andrew Chalkin, and "The Planetary Scientist's Companion," Katharine Lodders and Bruce Fegley, Jr.
If one of the other books, "The New Solar System" is lacking in mathematics, this volume more than makes up for it. Although my current interest, the Titius/Bode Law, is given only one page of description, it is a full and fair assessment of this astronomical curiosity. The authors immediately follow this on p. 9 by a statement that sums up the flavor of the rest of the book: "...It is Newton's laws that are at work and the subtle gravitational effect that determines the dynamical structure of our solar system is the phenomenon of 'resonance'." Planets do not circle the sun independently, they influence each other's orbits in fascinating and subtle ways, some of which may take billions of years to evolve.
The manifold aspects of "resonance" can be seen in the Chapter headings: The Two-Body Problem, The Restricted Three-Body Problem, Tides, Rotation, and Shape, Spin-Orbit Coupling, The Disturbing Function, Secular Perturbations, Resonant Perturbations, Chaos and Long-Term Evolution, and Planetary Rings.
The mathematics appears to be straightforward, but like most perturbation theory, it is not simple. Calculus is essential, of course. However, I welcome it. It will challenge my curiosity and ability for many years to come.
This is a compelling, must-have book for the advanced student of the science underlying our solar system and probably of other planetary systems as well.

Richly detailed, with dense mathematics and many typos

I bought this book hoping to learn about subtleties in the solar system such as horseshoe orbits, shepherding satellites in ring systems, etc. I was richly rewarded. The book goes into deep detail on a large variety of secular and resonant phenomena. But a couple of warnings are appropriate.

First, the book has a very high density of equations, and having studied physics I've seen my share. The math is not too difficult, really (mostly expansions, transformations, etc.), but the authors do not shy away from showing all the details of a calculation. In several chapters expansion follows expansion until the reader is lost in a sea of similar variables. Without spending much more time deriving the results myself, there was no hope of following portions of their development. The book might well have benefitted from tighter editing in this regard; perhaps more of this detail could have been relegated to appendices so that the physical conclusions would stand out more clearly.

Second, there are a lot of errors in the book, both typos in equations and in surrounding text. I easily spotted a number of errors which were obvious even to a neophyte in orbital mechanics like myself. They should not have escaped good proofreading. A Google search for "solar system dynamics errata" (without the quotes) will bring you to a pdf file containing detailed corrections. Kudos to the authors for maintaining such a file! I strongly recommend readers download it and keep it handy while using the book.

Bottom line: tough going but rewarding.

A Classic of the Field

We all know that the solar system is a system centered on the sun (we know that now, needless to say that in Galileo's time you went to jail for saying that). What few of us realize is just how dynamic the solar system really is.

The rings of Saturn were first discovered by Galileo in 1610, but not really understood to be a thin disk of indivudial items until Maxwell in 1859. The rings of Uranus, Neptune and Jupiter weren't really discovered until very recently. Why rings? Why are they spaced the way they are? Why are some of them twisted. And what about comets, some of which have moons of their own?

This is the classic book on how things move in the solar system. It is the world of Newtonian mechanics, but brought forward by 350 years of observatiosn.

This book does not shy away from the mathematics that really describe what's happening. A bit of calculus, including integral calculus, will be needed to get the full impact of what the authors are saying.

Not a text to read for fun, but it is a good reference. Early on he makes reference to types of medicine that he has hasn't explained, and it was a little confusing. Otherwise, the text was understandable, just dense.

Albert Boime, author of The Unveiling of the National Icons, deconstructs five symbols of the nation (the American flag, the Vietnam War Veteran's Memorial, Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty and the Marine Corps Memorial) with an eye to uncovering the social, psychological, and political meaning beneath the surface. Though Boime's psychoanalysis can often seem just a little over the top, many of the points he makes about patriotism, national identity, and the interpretation and reinterpretation of symbols over time are right on the money. And even if you don't agree that the nation's symbols skirt dangerously close to fascism, Boime's provocative discussion of the place of icons in American social and political life is sure to make you think the next time you find yourself pledging allegiance to the flag or reading the names on the Vietnam memorial.

a piece of historical trash talking

Oh, my what a shocking book. I only got a few pages into the first chapter when I was sickened by the author's obvious dislike for the United States Flag. He calls one famous song, "You're a Grand Old Rag" intentionally. He uses gross sexuality to try to explain the emontional connection people have with our flag. He calls the Daughters and Sons of the American Revoltuion "conservative" groups --when those groups have for decades avoided ANY political positions. It seems he has looked for the most bizarre quotations he could find and then enlarge upon those to be uncouth.

Watch what you eat!

Words can hardly express the beauty and cleverness of "Successful Scientific Writing" by Matthews, Bowen and Matthews as a step-by-step guide on how to write scientific reports for publication in English. I am using this book for a course that I teach on scientific writing at the Postgraduate School of Health Sciences at Aarhus University in Denmark, and I find it to be perfect! Before this book was published, there was none that dealt so well and so entertainingly with so many aspects of what it actually takes to prepare a manuscript for publication in a scientific journal. Many young (and old) scientists are good thinkers, but they are often poor writers! Thus, although they may have been able to design and carry out an experiment, they often lack the ability to express what they have done clearly and concisely. This book is for them! The first few chapters provide mainly words of encouragement for getting the writing process underway. There are also remarkable bits of advice, such as the notion of avoiding certan snacks that could derail ones momentum. In my view, the crux of the book appears in chapters 5, 6 and 7 in which extraordinarily lucid and practical instructions and exercises are presented for improving one's ability to write scientifically. There are also tips on how to optimize word-processing so that the manuscript submitted to the editor of a journal is most likely to be accepted for publication. Perhaps some old-timers in Science can do without this book, but they should nevertheless have a copy of it on hand for their students.

well written and worthwhile

it is unfortunate the authors did not review the most recent scientific style and format conventions of the council of biology editors(accepted internationally) that were published in 1994. had they done so, they would not have made a number of the errors that show up scattered about in the text. i use parts of this text , especially the exercises, in a course i teach on scientific writing and have to make the corrections as we go along

A Retrospective on a Great Western

This book is a collection of essays on "The Wild Bunch" written in the late 90s. (When I bought the book, I had thought that the book would include some original reviews and show how attitudes toward "The Wild Bunch" had changed over time.)
Most of the essays are very good. The first, on how the script of the movie took shape, is worth the price of the book itself. Apparently, one can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, or at least we movie lovers were extremely lucky.
The only essay that is a dud is the last one, in which the author argues that "The Wild Bunch" is not a great film, that it is too romantic, and that "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" is Peckinpah's real masterpiece. Now, I think PG&BK is a very good movie, but it doesn't hold up as well as "The Wild Bunch" (and I have seen the restored PG&BK.) The idea of including an essay attacking the greatness of a movie that is the inspiration for the book strikes me as odd.
However, this book is recommended for those with an interest in Westerns and Sam Peckinpah.

Suggested Textbook Reading- a general review of weed management

I bought this as the cheaper of the two textbook 'recommendations' (Non Chemical Weed Managament: Principles, Concepts and Technology (Cabi Publishing)) by my UF professor. It is a very good general view and is accompanied by a number of good charts. I cannot in particular say whether one is better than the other, but this one is considerably longer. I cannot also say for sure how it will impact a non-student or be useful for a farmer, but the book states all of the principles very well, if not giving a great description of how to carry them out. Overall a well-written book for the agriculture student.

Wonderful design, good but not great execution

I was looking for a comprehensive introduction to creativity research for students that combined a mapping function--showing what is out there by whom trending where--and a grounding interest function--showing how the research really does elucidate and give insight on insights, creation, etc.. Well..... The table of contents was perfect--absolutely perfect. But half of the articles served purely as mappings, with little or no insight provided. One does not know immediately whether to ascribe this to a fault in the articles included on in the research surveyed. Students who happened to get assigned good chapters came away excited, but those who happened to get assigned purely mapping chapters were bored by creativity research and hard to keep motivated. So now I have to use Sternberg's earlier book on Insight along with this Handbook. I apologize for the honesty of this review. It is a great mapping book and a moderate insight provider in sum.

Not for getting informed but to understand the subject!

Dr.Sternberg's book on the evolution process of creativity research is a splendit source for anybody who deals with social sciences, a must for organizational behaviorists and a very satisfactory piece of reading for general reader.
The book does not give mere descriptions on the scope of creativity but it provides great amount of knowledge on the evolutionary process of creativity research from ancient times up to today! Furthermore, the subject of creativity has been examined both from theoretical and methodological perspective in such a creative manner which gives a very good knowledge about the major approaches, the outcomes of the previous researchs, main obstacles in the course of investigation, and finally the probable studies for further research on the creativity.
Consequently, the reader finds a good chance not only to have a detailed theoretical and practical information on the subject but also to learn the main approaches of outstanding social scientists towards the subject and not mentioning about the meticoulisly prepared bibliography.
I am amazed with the intensity of Dr.Sternberg's study the language of which is clear enough those of us whose Mother tongue is not English (like me!).

Thick and plentiful - worth it but not easy

Sternberg's Handbook has an almost mythical reputation amongst the Creative Studies Students at Buffalo State College. While there are shortcomings to the Handbook, areas where key authors or subjects are missing (it is written from the behavioral scientist point of view, and there are other, equally valid viewpoints in creative studies), each chapter will have plenty of food for thought.

And, guaranteed, you will have the time to digest this food for thought, as each and every chapter requires slow and careful reading. If the writing were to be any denser, it would tear free from the pages and sink to the very center of the Earth! Yet, there is so much information that, in the end, the knowledge derived is more than worth the work needed to get at it.

One last note: This is a handbook for those interested in the deep research on creativity. It is NOT suitable a "first book" for anyone starting out to learn about creativity!
