A classic review of social welfare policy

I am about to begin teaching a course on Nonprofit Law, Policy and Government. This is the first book on the reading list I inherited from my predecessor. It is so fruitful that I have been able to sketch out the entire class lesson schedule from it. Excellent introduction to public welfare policies and the social issues that drive them.

Everything you ever wanted to know about The English Poor Law

Reading Adam Smith and the like they use the term English Poor Law like everyone knows about it. You have to pick it up mostly by reference.
This book hit the nail on the head. It is dense, well structured and every other sentence has a further reference for those that want to dive deeper.
No pictures or exotic formulas. There are a lot of peripheral subjects or offshoots from the main thrust of the book.
I did not buy the book for a discussion. However it does its own discussing which gives a berrer understanding of the subject.

Precise, detailed and brief

Paul Slack is the author of many works regarding the socio-economic conditions of early modern England: this is one of his briefer works, yet it is wonderfully detailed and insightful. If you're interested in the topic of early modern welfare, historical treatment of the poor, and the criminalization of poverty during this time, this is the book for you. It's also a good source if you're a student doing research and/or a paper, as this text is very brief: lots of information in a condensed format.
