Boring. and I'm an academic! Does anyone need to read this stuff? Too many long quotes, esp. since the book is short. This is typing, not writing. I'm sure the research is adequate, but ultimately, who cares about any of this? The writer demonstrates that black minstrel shows were popular and that they made blacks look bad. Duh. It's really no more complex than that; the writer merely tries to make you think it is, with 'profound' and 'important' dates and charts and....

Watch out you don't get Summary rather than orig 1152 page book

A weakness in Amazon is the lack of verification of versions or editions of books.
There are two versions of this - The original 1995 1152 page book with all the details, and a "Summary" version published one year later in 1996 that is about 50 pages. Many vendors seem to list the isbn for the 1152 page version, but sell you the short version.

Thus make sure to verify directly with the vendor which version they have for sale. Many copies of the short Summary are available, but it is really hard to find a legitimate 1152 page version. The original book was from Cambridge Publications in the UK, and as of Jan, 2013, the 1152 page version is out of print.

I gave this one star to warn you about the versions. Amazon needs better quality control over vendors and versions.

We are screwed!

UN master plan to save the world and eliminate at least 80% of the worlds population.
Animals and plants have more rights than humans. Most of the world is set aside for plants and animals.
No private property for humans and we will be restricted to tiny alcoves or communes less tha 1% of the land area.
Limit families to one child.
No cars , either walk or ride a bike.
No recreation of any type, like skiing that might interfere with the environment .
In short , it is the total regimentation of all life on the planet where humans are the problem.

How will this happen? Well, it is happening right now as Sustaiable Developement in our local communities.
Check your local planning department and it they belong to ICLEI's.

This admission is so staggering that we are to become automatons with no free will to do anything.

A fine survey of the great Mughal Empire, one of the "gunpowder empires" that developed across Eurasia in the early modern period. This book contains 2 major strands; the basic narrative history of the Empire, and the development of the Mughal state and its impact on Indian society. Richards presents these strands in a series of chapters alternating between narratives of the reigns of the Mughal Emperors and more topical chapters examining the nature of the Mughal state, economic, and some social history. The latest and arguably most successful in a series of invaders from Islamic central Asia, the Mughals were the inheritors of prior Indo-Muslim states in north India and a sophisticated Islamo-Persian political tradition. The Mughal founder, Babur, benefited from intelligent use of firearms combined with heavy cavalry.

Richards has an excellent series of analyses of the development and nature of the Mughal state. The early Mughal Emperors, particularly the highly intelligent (and illiterate) Akbar combined existing political traditions and some innovations to develop a relatively centralized state with formidable military and fiscal power. One key feature of the mature Mughal state was a cosmopolitan service nobility comprised of central Asians, Persians, Indo-Muslims, and Hindus. Somewhat in parallel was a sophisticated bureaucracy, staffed mainly by Hindus, able to consistently raise impressive amounts of revenue through direct taxation. Richards stresses that the Mughal bureaucracy penetrated in important ways to the local level and restricted, though incompletely, the power of local magnates. The Mughals had a considerable positive economic impact on India. Their success brought peace to much of India and they generally pursued policies aimed at economic expansion. These policies undoubtedly contributed to considerable population growth, agricultural expansion, increasing regional and inter-regional trade, and proto-industrialization. The Mughal tax system, which demanded specie, contributed significantly to the monetarization and marketization of the Indian economy. An interesting complement to the Mughal domestic economic expansion was considerable expansion of international trade, much by Europeans dominating the Indian Ocean. A great deal of the precious metals needed for Mughal currency was imported from the western hemisphere.

The linchpin of the Mughal system was the Imperial Court. The whole system depended on capable leadership from the center and the Mughals benefited from a series of very capable Emperors. The importance of Imperial leadership is illustrated also by Richards' description of the decline of the Empire in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The last great Emperor, Aurangzeb, was a capable and conscientious leader but also a pious Muslim whose pursuit of orthodoxy had a negative impact on the legitimacy of the regime and relationships with Hindu aristocrats. The Mughal state was also built around conquest and expansion. Aurangzeb's unremitting pursuit of conquest in South India led to draining wars with pronounced negative effects. Typical of central Asian descended dynasties, the Mughals never developed a clear succession mechanism and each succession resulted in a civil war among Imperial princes. Coupled with other stresses, the final succession war fatally compromised the power of the Imperial court and resulted in an India comprised of a set of regional successor states. This was the chronically divided and conflict plagued subcontinent that permitted opportunistic European conquest.

concise information about the mughal empire

This book is an excellent source of information about the mughal dynasty. It is written in a chronological manner and hence, easy to read and follow even for the novice user to this subject. The author has stuck to the main theme of the lives of the emperors themselves, their artistic contribution to India and the people that influenced them. The facts about the emperors especially Jahangir, Shahjahan , the Rajput kings, Shivaji's greatness and Shambhaji's misadventures makes it an interesting read. I feel that this book brings forth the facts that are not widely known or mentioned in school history books that brings forth some suprises and hence makes it an interesting read.

An excellent survey marred by too little attention to women

Dr. Richards' otherwise excellent book about the Mughal Empire is marred by his failure to pay very much attention to its women. Gulbadan is mentioned but once, Jodh Bai, Shah Jahan's mother, not at all, Nur Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal only peripherally. Are the Mughal chronicles themselves similarly silent about these women? Since Gulbadan wrote her own, one must say no.

An exceptional overview of one of Messiaen's most characteristic works

Olivier Messiaen's Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps is, in many ways, a textbook example of all of the techniques he had consolidated up until 1941 (and is still a characteristic "textbook" up until 1950). This explains the profusion of examples from this work that find their way into Messiaen's literal textbook dating from this period, Technique de mon langage musical.

Considering this, Anthony Pople's handbook on Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps is an excellent entry into the world of Messiaen. Pople amply extracts the most prevalent techniques in this music directly from Technique de mon langage musical (A publication relatively hard to find outside of the university or conservatory library), and elaborates on them.

Due to the length and space (as well as the presumed targeted audience) provided for Cambridge Handbooks, some of the analysis is rather glossed over: the rhythmic and harmonic pedals in 'Liturgie de cristal', for example, do indeed have variation, contrary to Pople's explanation of these cycles. To Pople's credit, he points out one of the instances of this in the rhythmic pedal of the cello.

As this may only occur in the first printing of this book, the following may be excused if it has been corrected in subsequent editions. In the Appendix that cites the modes of limited transposition, there is a mistake in the example of Mode 7. The correct version in C transposition is C, Db, D natural, Eb, F, F#, G, Ab, A natural, B (enharmonically spelled). Although this may seem like nitpicking, The suggestion will surely be helpful to the frustrated student trying to realize the 6 proper transpositions to no avail. This is obviously a misprint, as Anthony Pople correctly cites the mode in his paper "Messiaen's Musical Language: An Introduction", in The Messiaen Companion.

Overall, this is a wise place to start in any study or appreciation of Olivier Messiaen's music, and Anthony Pople should be commended for this exceptional work.

The introduction of the work gives some background on Messiaen, speaking about his life and earlier works (useful for understanding where some of the material of the fifth movement came from). The the Quatuor's creation, within the Stalag prisoner-of-war camp in Nazi Germany, is legendary and receives some discussion here, although those hoping for even more information on the setting should turn to Rebecca Rishin's "For the End of Time: The Story of the Messiaen Quartet" (Cornell University Press, 2003).

Each of the eight movements of the Quatuor has its own chapter, and the analysis differs based on the special properties of each. For example, form and colour are the focus of the second movement ("Vocalise..."), while birdsong is the major topic of the third ("Abime des oiseaux"). The quartet was written as Messiaen was conducting the experiments that led to his early book "Technique", and Pople carefully charts the innovations of rhythm and pitch that Messiaen was developing at this time. As with all entries in the CMH series, quotations from the score abound.

If you have some musical training, Pople's book will vastly expand your appreciation of the "Quatuor". I went from thinking it a juvenille work compared to "Des canyons aux etoiles" or "Eclairs sur l'aux-dela" to seeing it as a piece of marvellous ingenuity.
