Walking and knowing the path

I have given this full marks because studying it is a deeply moving experience for me. However, the book has no star maps, a serious omission because much of the poem and even some of the commentary is mumbo jumbo without an aid to visualization. For example, the commentary often provides star co-ordinates, such as constellation alpha, beta etc, and even touches on star magnitudes. However, any good amateur astronomy book should cover this lapse.
As they say, there is a difference between walking a path and knowing the path. If astronomy is knowing the stars, the poem 'Phaenomena' is a walk through them. But the walk is a stumble without guidance, in this case provided by Kidd's text, supplemented with star maps. It has enabled me to appreciate not only the ancient popularity of this poem but, by extension, all didactic poetry.
As with other texts in this Cambridge series, the scholarship is impeccable. Kidd provides a bibliography as long as your fat aunt's panties, with excellent background material on the poet's history and prosody, the manuscript tradition etc, and his line by line commentary deals with textual, historical and astronomical issues in good, clear English. It is a bit expensive but worth every cent.
