The best exegesis of prostitution in Shanghai 1849 to 1949 I have read. Phenomenal contrast to Gail Hershatter's " Dangerous Pleasures: Prostitution and Modernity in Twentieth-Century Shanghai" and Catherine Yeh's "Shanghai Love: Courtesans, Intellectuals, and Entertainment Culture, 1850-1910". The latter two books both provide two dialogues that are perceived with different agenda's and valuable adjuncts to Henriot's study. Henriot's realistic look at prostitution in the social and cultural context of Shanghai from 1849-1949 with all the economic, social and cultural shifts and changes throughout that period in Shanghai and greater China concludes with the premise that "...Prostitution arises out of an inequality between sexes marked by a cultural imprint that has placed women in a condition of subordination..." Very thorough and thought provoking research affirms the non-rights of women in family, marriage, and by the state.
