Child Care and Culture: Lessons from Africa, by Robert A. Levine, Sarah Levine, Suzanne Dixon, Amy Richman, P. Herbert Leiderman, Constanc

Child Care and Culture examines parenthood, infancy, and early childhood in an African community, revealing patterns unanticipated by current theories of child development and raising provocative questions about the concept of "normal" child care. Comparing the Gusii people of Kenya with the American white middle class, the authors show how divergent cultural priorities create differing conditions for early childhood development. Combining the perspectives of social anthropology, pediatrics, and developmental psychology, the authors demonstrate how child care customs can be responsive to varied socioeconomic, demographic, and cultural conditions without inflicting harm on children. This text will be of interest to researchers in child development and anthropology.

Review
"Child Care and Culture provides an outstanding model for how to bring population-level cultural or ethnic variation into the study of parenting and human development not only in far-off places like Africa, but everywhere." Thomas S. Weisner, Contemporary Psychology

"This book presents not only a wealth of investigation and description about infancy in East Africa, but raises questions about the very foundations of human consciousness...Child Care and Culture provides an interesting and provocative look at American theories in contrast with Gusii practices, and expands concepts of the meaning of early human experience to life in each society." The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease

"This well-written and engaging book provides a glimpse into this world and how it has changed over the past 40 years....Child Care and Culture is a valuable and provocative book. It describes an important project and raises interesting questions about the nature and course of human development. Finally, the authors are to be commended for conducting a project that has contributed in both scholarly and humanitarian ways." Mary Gauvain, Mind, Culture, and Activity

Take a lesson from Africa
By Kimberly
This informative book really opened my mind about child-rearing practices. It's so important to remember that Western culture is not the only one in the world and that we would do well to learn what other cultures have to offer us. Gusii parents in Kenya use what the authors call a "pediatric" way of raising children, contrasted to the "pedagogical" way Western parents tend to raise children. Many of the Gusii practices, which are generally concerned with protecting the comfort and health of the child, could be used by American parents beneficially.
I especially liked the vignettes of the families towards the end of the book.
This book is more appropriate for the person who is academically interested in the subject - it's not really soemthing the average person would sit down with for a good read.

Excellent insights into child psychology
By Wilma James
This book was interesting to me because I had read citations to the literature on the Gusii tribe many times over and wanted to read the original research myself. In contrast to the much-cited advantages of the Gusii child-rearing practices, I found a balanced look at how their treatment of children affects their children. Some things they do like constant baby-wearing and nursing on demand lead Gusii babies to be motorically advanced, walking at 9 months, and helping them to survive the first year better than in other African cultures. What most other sources do not refer to is the fact that Gusii women raise their children in relative isolation (using older children to help care for younger ones--who in fact do much of the baby-wearing while the mother works on her farm), and that they do not make eye-contact or speak to their children. This naturally leads to cultural differences in personality and sociability and verbal ability later on, because culture imprints itself early on. Hence, comparisons with American babies yield "deficits" in the Gussi children.

Also not usually referred to is the abrupt shift in the connection to the mother at the age of one year, when the child is no longer carried and if I recall correctly, no longer breastfed (at least not on demand). This leads to tremendous differences in the child's cognitive and physical ability, as the child struggles to deal with this abrupt shift in parental attention.

I found it to be an excellent book--not for the lay reader, however. It was clearly written for the academic community. I am a researcher in the field of psychology and found it accessible, however.
