Reading the West is a collection of critical essays by writers, independent scholars, and critics on the literature of the American West. The essays in this volume enrich our understanding of western writing by reemphasizing the importance of 'place' in literary studies.
About the Author
Albert Gelpi is Professor Emeritus of American Literature at Stanford University, California. His previous books include Emily Dickinson: The Mind of the Poet, The Tenth Muse, and A Coherent Splendor. Gelpi has also edited the work of, and written criticism on, a wide range of poets, including Wallace Stevens, Robinson Jeffers, Adrienne Rich, Denise Levertov, Robert Duncan, and William Everson. The Letters of Robert Duncan and Denise Levertov, co-edited with Robert Bertholf, won an award from the MLA as the best scholarly edition of a literary correspondence. Gelpi continues to teach in the Stanford Continuing Studies Program.
Ross Posnock is Anna Garbedian Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University.

How the West Was Deconstructed

This collection of essays encompasses a wide range of scholarship about the American West and what it has meant to people over the years. Some of the contributors deal with literature, some with film, some with painting, but all of them work to untangle what it is about the West that has made it the object of so much art (both good and bad) over the decades.
"Reading the West" is probably intended for academics in the humanities rather than the average reader, but the essays here are quite clearly written and for the most part they avoid the pitfalls of indecipherable jargon that's become so common in academia.
A good companion to this collection would be Wallace Stegner's essay "The American West as Living Space," which sets the geographic and historical stage for the establishment of (European) American civilization in the western U.S.
