This is a scholarly work. I just wanted to get the flavor of Hobbes; got the three-course meal instead.

Cambridge edition is the Best edition available.
By What's in a name?
Cambridge has printed the best reasonably priced edition available of Hobbes' Leviathan, so this is the edition I most highly recommend. This is quality publishing, worthy of the Cambridge name. This edition has an index, which is a very helpful feature in such a book; many editions do not have an index. Many editions alter the spellings of words and make other such alterations to the original; this is not the case with the Cambridge edition; you get what Hobbes wrote, as accurately as you are likely to ever find.
However, as the English language has changed over the years, many would prefer reading an altered, modernized version, and for ease of reading, I recommend the Hackett edition Leviathan: With Selected Variants from the Latin Edition of 1668 that also contains selected variants from the Latin edition (translated into English), which was a bit different from the English edition that Hobbes had published. In other words, when Hobbes originally wrote the book, he came out with two editions, one in English and one in Latin, and they are not quite the same. Hackett gives you some of the differences, which is interesting. However, although they were different, the majority is just like a translation rather than actually different, so Hackett only provides some differences, and also, the differences are not likely to be important to the average reader.
In short, if you want the original text, buy this one from Cambridge, and if you want it modernized to be easier to read, buy the Hackett edition.
The very worst edition you can buy is probably the Prometheus edition, which omits the last two sections of the book! (In general, you should avoid Prometheus editions of books, as they are very poorly done as a rule.)

definitive edition of this work

Leviathan is a the most exiting work of political philosophy I have ever read. You may disagree with it, but you should read it anyway and recognize its significance in the history of ideas.
This edition is a good one. Its pages are thin enough for ink to bleed through, but the text itself is definitive and its printing is based on editions from Hobbes' lifetime. Contrary to a prior reader review, this edition DOES have parts three and four, although rarely do those sections get read anymore (the interesting things are in one and two).
