In a vivid, ethnographic account of immigrant groups living in West London, Gerd Baumann breaks with the conventional discourse of community studies to explore their mutual interaction. By treating Southall--the most densely populated, multi-ethnic ghetto in the London area--as a social field, he considers how people from different backgrounds come to terms with one another and with the dominant, host culture, while at the same time affirming their own ethnic distinctiveness.

From the Back Cover
This innovative study presents an account of the interaction of people from different ethnic backgrounds who live in Southall, the most densely populated multi-ethnic ghetto of London. Breaking with the tradition of studying a single ethnic community, Gerd Baumann treats Southall as a single social field in which various immigrant groups come to terms both with one another and with the dominant culture of England.

A Great Step Forward in Social and Cultural Analysis.
By A Customer
This is the first truly comprehensive and truly analytical account of urban multicultural processes: comprehensive because it locates all groups within the total socvial field of the London sururb Southall, and analytical because it distinguishes the dominant discourse ABOUT minorities from the demotic discourse about and AMONG minorities. I recommend this book to anyone engaged in the study and / or politics of cultural, ethnic, religious etc. minorities.

Not light reading
By Susan Y. Page
In Contesting Culture, Gerd Baumann was the first to study a multi-ethnic neighborhood as a single social field, rather than follow the tradition of focusing on a single ethnic community. This book is a product of six years of research living in Southall, a suburb on the western edge of London. Southall is a working-class neighborhood, heavily populated by Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims, Afro-Caribbean, Irish, and English. Baumann's main thrust seems to be an analysis of how the terms "culture" and "community" are used. Reification of culture, i.e. ethnic reductionism marks the dominant discourse in Southall.
Baumann describes an alternate "demotic" discourse among Southallians, where communities and their ascribed cultures are not necessarily equated, as they are in the dominant discourse, and where there is evidence of cross-community and cross-cultural activity. Younger residents are much more likely to form friendships across communities, however. Among older Southallians, cross-community socialization occurs largely at places of worship.
Baumann explores whether there is indeed a common culture of Southall and determines that it is ambiguous at best. People across all groups are united apparently only in their description of Southall as "grotty." Although there is a determination to be civil in public no matter what, there is friction among the varying groups. Digging deeper into the various "communities of culture," Baumann finds that even culture communities that seem cohesive on the surface are not monolithic. For example, within the Sikhs, the most powerful and populous of the five identified communities, there is a complex history and relationships. There are Sikhs not only from the Punjab and East Africa, but also from different castes, and although castes are not as rigidly observed in Southall, they are still adhered to by many. In discussing Southallians' cross-cultural identification, Baumann describes the conscious creation by the neighborhood youth of an evolving "Asian" culture, as well as efforts to form a "Black" community and socialist and feminist networks, which cut across religious, ethnic, and country of origin boundaries.
That the people of Southall engage in both dominant and demotic discourses about culture and community, dependent upon context, occasion, and purpose, is the process of "contesting culture" that Baumann refers to in the title. He concludes, "All these renegotiations of culture and community form part of what anthropologists conceive culture to be in the first place: a process of making and remaking collective sense of changing social facts...." (p.189)
Baumann's book was groundbreaking in the area of community studies, and there is much to be gleaned here for the serious student of anthropology. It is not a work of literature, though, and if that is what you were hoping for, you may be disappointed; it makes for fairly tedious reading.
