A very fine introduction to the works and themes of Johnson.

The challenge of segregating Johnson's works into their themes and forms must have been daunting, but Greg Clingham and the several writers who contributed to this edition have done a marvelous job of providing an introduction to Johnson and his works. Chapters examine his poetry, his essays, his Dictionary, his attitudes towards religion, and women... This book will be appreciated by beginning and intermediate Johnsonians, and should be read.

Two Books-Not One

This book is a melding of two books-A Journy to the Western Islands of Scotland by Samuel Johnson and The Journal of a Tour to the Herrides with Samuel Johnson LL.D by James Boswell. Although these are two of the best writers of English Literature and Boswell is known mostly for his biography of Sameul Johnson, I cannot recommend this book. On the left pages of this book are Boswell's description of traveling with Johnson and on the right pages are Dr.. Johnson's description of the trip. The two really do not meld. I recommend the reader purchase inexpensive paperback editions(Oxford World Classics prints both works) of each title and read both. I feel the reader will get more from both works this way-they are both great artists.
