A history of the Hebrew language is a comprehensive description of Hebrew from its Semitic origins and the earliest settlement of the Israelite tribes in Canaan to the present day. Although Hebrew is an 'oriental' language, it is nonetheless closely associated with Western culture as the language of the Bible and was used in writing by the Jews of Europe throughout the Middle Ages. It has also been newly revived in modern times as the language of the State of Israel.

be not afraid

As a layman, neither linguist, theologian, nor Hebrew expert - just an amateur of the Hebrew Bible, I found Sáenz-Badillos book to be a challenging, fascinating revelation of a whole new level of scholarship which not only informed me, but inspired me to put it on my schedule for a re-read, and to take another stab at Genesius' Hebrew Grammar, the very opacity of which is a delight to the jaded who may have come to think they've seen everything.
The writing is wonderful; it has a crisp clarity of style that propels one through the sometimes difficult text. John Elwolde's translation is in and of itself a work of art. It seems impossible that the book was not written in English.
It would be a shame for anyone interested in the subject to miss this book.

Out of date upon its 1990s publication, haphazardly organized, and gives Modern Hebrew short shrift

Angel Sáenz-Badillos, a professor of Hebrew at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, originally wrote this history of the Hebrew language in Spanish in 1988. It was translated into English by John Elwode in 1993, and though it has been reprinted and made available as an ebook, it has not changed since the paperback reprinting of 1996. Sáenz-Badillos and then his publisher had probably been sitting on the manuscript for some time, as there are very few citations from before 1980. So, the first thing you need to know about this grammar is that it is rather out of date for readers well into this millennium.
All Hebrew words and phrases are cited in the Hebrew alphabet and accompanied by transliteration. But to really get anything out of this book you'll need at least some knowledge of Biblical Hebrew plus its tradition, that is, the Hebrew-language terms for grammatical categories and concepts. Even with this understanding, you're likely to find Sáenz-Badillos's presentation frustrating. He simply throws out one piece of individual trivia after another concerning sound or morphological changes out without giving us a clear, organized picture of overall stages. Sáenz-Badillos also assumes that readers are already familiar with disputes among specialists. This is not a friendly introduction to the field like, say, the history of Spanish that Cambridge University Press published at the same time. Maybe one could profitably use this for an expanded understanding of the field after working through a real introductory history, but going here first will only be an exercise in frustration.
Finally, it is worth nothing that Sáenz-Badillos admits early on that he's not so interested in Modern Hebrew, as he feels continuity was broken in the time between Medieval Hebrew and the restoration of the language in the budding state of Israel. He does, however, dedicate 12 pages to the polemics surrounding this restoration, far less than prior stages of the language. So, if Modern Israeli Hebrew interests you, you'd be better served with another publication.

Excellent introduction

This is an excellent introduction into the internal linguistic history of the Hebrew language. The bibliography is 66 pages long, in rather small print, and is constantly referred to in the text. As a starting point to get an overview of this field of scholarship, it is probably without equal today.
As a technical work, presenting a summary of a highly technical field of study, it is astonishingly accessible to the non-specialist. Much more so than, for example, the Brown-Driver-Briggs lexicon, in that for citing examples only two alphabets are used: Hebrew, of course, and a Latin based phonetic alphabet defined in a table on page 19. It does not assume a knowledge of the scripts of Syriac, Ethiopic, Arabic, Aramaic, Akkadian cuneiform and so on. Even mastery of the Hebrew alphabet is not strictly necessary to use the work because all citations in Hebrew are accompanied by transliterations into the phonetic alphabet.
The author employs the terminology and methods of descriptive linguistics, but those who have had an introductory course in this field will have little difficulty with it. It is assumed that the reader knows what is meant by terms like phoneme, allophone, morpheme, grapheme, lexeme, isogloss, synchronic, diachronic, etc.
