About the Author
Mark Irving Lichbach is Professor and Chair of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland. A theorist interested in social choice and a comparativist interested in globalization, Lichbach explores the connections between collective action theories and political conflict as well as the connections between collective choice theories and democratic institutions. He is the author or editor of many books, including the award-winning The Rebel's Dilemma, and of numerous articles that have appeared in scholarly journals in political science, economics, and sociology.
Alan S. Zuckerman is a Professor of Political Science, and former chair of the department, at Brown University and a research professor at the DIW (German Institute of Economic Research). He has served as a visiting professor and scholar at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Istituto di Scienze Umane, Florence, Italy, New York University, the University of Pisa, Stanford University, Tel-Aviv University, and the University of Essex. He is the author of Politics of Faction: Christian Democratic Rule in Italy and Doing Political Science; co-author of The Transformation of the Jews; editor of The Social Logic of Politics: Personal Networks as Contexts for Political Behavior; and co-editor of Comparative Politics: Rationality, Culture, and Structure (Cambridge University Press, 1997). In addition, Professor Zuckerman has published numerous articles in leading political science journals.

Cornerstone of the discipline

This is a great piece of work. The essays are short and concise. If you plan on taking graduate exams, START with this book to find out how to carve up the discipline. Read this book about 1 week before your exam, you won't be sorry.
This is also a book with theory applications. The chapters on structures and rational choice are particularly strong in that vein. This is also a book you will want to own so you can mark it up.
