good for solid state physicists

A short paragraph from this book:
"Now the transformation of (7.18) is just a matter of multiplying out the matrices defined in (7.19) in the right order. It takes several pages of algebra, and it is very easy to make mistakes (believe me, I speak from experience). Therefore, I suggest you either do not do it, or, if possible, set it as an exercise for anyone who particularly irritates you."
Now I say, any textbook with this kind of writing can't be too bad. Still, this book is "not" an easy one. It's an invaluable reference for physicists working on magnetic properties from the Dirac theory up, as one reviewer said. Not the best for high-energy oriented, though.

This is an excellent introduction to Relativistic Quantum Mechanics. I would highly recommend this text for the use of final year (special option) undergraduate students and post-graduates who wish to obtain a fundamental grasp of this exciting area of research.
This text, which starts at a basic level, introduces the reader to the theory of special relativity and angular momentum. Later chapters aim to give the reader insight into how Relativistic Quantum Mechanics can be used to describe, for example, magneto-optical effects (important in the magentic recording industry) and superconductivity (another 'hot' area of research in physics today).

Lucid and Approachable Introduction

Professor Strange obviously has a gift for illuminating prose,as this Beginning Graduate text is very well written,wittingly conversational.
This is a fine introductory exposition with many detailed, explicit mathematical steps;those derivations not shown explicitly are easily established by the reader.
Prerequisites are those acquired/mastered in the standard physics and mathematics curriculum up to Senior year of study.
The author discusses aspects not thoroughly discussed elsewhere at such an elementary vantage,examples include:
Thomas Precession ,an alternative discussion of Dirac equation due to Feynman and Gell-Mann ,elaboration of Zitterbewegung and
Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation,thorough discussion of various Potentials,a chapter treating Scattering Theory
( providing an elementary introduction to Green's Functions) is quite detailed.Separate sections are devoted to
Thomson, Rayleigh and Compton Scattering.The applications to condensed matter and atomic physics are exemplary.
Example of author's insight (Page 211) : "...what is meant by spin ? Spin is given this name because it obeys angular momentum
commutation relations and because it is an intrinsic property of a particle....can the intrinsic spin be anything like our classical notions
of spin ? The answer is 'almost', which is about as irritating as it could be....to see why this is so consider the following two arguments."
The appendices discuss Uncertainty Principles,Special Functions and System of Units.The problems are quite complementary to
the text and are straightforward. A worthwhile addition to the textbook literature of Relativistic Quantum Mechanics.
