Professors Emeritus Thomas Hardy Book Club

Published in 1999, Dale Krammer's collected critical articles on Thomas Hardy's oeuvre are antique, more suitable to a history of Hardy criticism than to Hardy criticism. (M. Millgate's biographical entry is biography and not criticism. Why it is included is odd.) Krammer has gathered together a group of his emertus friends and published their dated articles that are available in print and so the Oxford collection is hardly a critical necessity. Curious that they would publish such except that the authors are, I suspect, old familiars with Oxford Press and so approval was more a question of asking rather than critical review for the novely, importance, and availablity of the material. Krammer's anthology is most likely the author's homage to his academic companions of the road, a Hardian gesture (Poems 1912-13) for sure but of no critical value to today's student of Hardy. KZM
